Last month, IHG announced that they were changing the category values for 400 of their hotels.  Some of the hotels are going DOWN in category, but the majority of them are going up, including the introduction of 2 new top-end categories (for 55,000 and 60,000 points / night).  One side effect of the increase in points is that the free night certificates that you get with the IHG credit card become even more useful!

As is usual for posts like this, while you can see the official list on IHG’s site, I have created a map and sortable table showing which hotels are changing

I colored the map based on the amount that it was changing, with reds being increases (bad) and greens being decreases (good).  I tried to break it down by brand and point change, but that got to be too many different options.  Point me to the Plane has a good breakdown of changes by brand, country and state.

Here is also a sortable that allows you to filter by brand, hotel name, city or state

IHG Category changes going into effect on February 17th (Wednesday)

These changes go into effect on February 17th (this Wednesday), so if you have your eye on one of these properties, you’ll want to book before then!  In the (relatively more) unlikely scenario that you have an existing reservation at a hotel whose point requirements are going DOWN, you can contact IHG to get a refund of the points
