I am not a road warrior in the sense that I spend hundreds of nights per year in hotels, but I travel a fair amount, and at hotels across a wide variety of quality, price and star level. I’ve stayed in some 5 star hotels, and also a few hotels where they have to remind you not to steal the towels and TV

Getting The Little Things Right

I am blessed (cursed?) with a personality that just happens to notice lots of details. While this works out in my favor in many ways, sometimes it can get annoying. So while I’m at hotels, I happen to notice if the hotel pays attention to some of the little things. I still vividly remember a stay at a Hyatt Place where I felt like they didn’t take care of the little things. And so then I’m left to wonder if I can’t count on you to take care of the little things, how can I count on you for the important things?

The Breakfast Sign At The Hyatt Place Provo

Anyway, that’s a long preamble to a recent stay at the Hyatt Place Provo. I was there with my son and while we were eating breakfast, I happened to notice a sign above the bin where you were supposed to put your dishes

a sign on a wall

I immediately noticed that they had mistyped garbage as “garage” and I joked with my son about how I was going to take my dishes out next door and scrape them off in the parking garage next door (#dadjoke). Later I also noticed that they duplicated “into them” as well. No big deal – mistakes and typos happen and it’s even possible that the person typing this up doesn’t speak English as their first language.

I don’t know if someone heard me joking about it or if someone else pointed it out, but when I went down to breakfast the next day, the sign had been fixed!

Way to go Hyatt Place Provo! Again, I don’t think that this is THAT big of a deal, but it’s something I noticed.

The Bottom Line

I had a former boss (boss’s boss’s boss) who used to say “if I can’t count on you to take care of the little things, how can I count on you for the important things?”. And while I don’t think that’s always true with every little detail, to me, if I notice a hotel paying attention to and taking care of little details like this, then it makes me more likely to want to stay them, because I believe that they will take care of bigger issues (if they come up).

What do you think about hotels getting the “little things” right? Does it make you want to stay there? Leave your thoughts in the comments below
