There are unfortunate events that happen during travel, and this one is no exception. Two travel bloggers have been identified as the couple who fell to their death. Meenakshi Moorthy and Vishnu Viswananth from the creative Instagram account Holidays and Happily Ever Afters were found deceased after falling 800 feet. It is reported that they were trying to take a selfie and fell off a cliff. Their tripod was found the next morning by other visitors, and authorities were called to investigate. Authorities used high powered binoculars and helicopter lifts to find them.
The couple was recently married in India, and was bitten by the travel bug quickly after. They decided to document their journeys on their Instagram page. A shot from a recent Instagram post from them indicated that they had thought previously about the risks inherent in selfie taking on the edge
This is extremely heartfelt for me as my wife and I are very much in the same spot in our lives. Truly this is a tragedy and our thoughts and prayers go out to their friends and family. Officials from the Yosemite National Park Service say that there is an “inherent risk” to visiting these parks. A recent study actually found that “selfie deaths” are becoming a large issue.
My take is that there is always a risk to everything you do in life. However, evaluating risk vs. reward is important on any of your travels.
