So if you haven’t heard by now, Club Carlson has announced that starting June 1,  . I first heard about it on Twitter from Travel with Grant, but it’s also been covered by Frequent Miler, One Mile at a Time, Mommy Points, Miles to Memories, View from the Wing and just about everyone 😀

The announcement

The email I got from Club Carlson said, in part,

Beginning June 1, 2015, you can earn a Free Night, good at any Carlson Rezidor hotel in the U.S. This Free Night will replace the current Bonus Award Night benefit. Bonus Award Night stays may not be booked after June 1, 2015. You’ll receive the new Free Night award upon renewal of your card after an annual spend of $10,000.

Why this is a big deal

Not any more!

The Bonus Award night was probably one of the best travel deals out there.  The ability to effectively double your points (when staying in 2-night increments) was a HUGE benefit.  However it seems to have been TOO lucrative for Club Carlson, as they have now eliminated it.

The irony for me is that I am LITERALLY enjoying this benefit right now!  I am sitting at a Country Inn and Suites, where our family of 8 paid 18,000 points for 2 rooms for 2 nights at a Category 1 hotel.

What to do next

There are 2 things to do now.

  • First of all – you’ll want to book any and all Club Carlson redemptions between now and May 31st.  Club Carlson has clarified that the Bonus Award night is going away June 1st, and any redemptions before that will be eligible for the Bonus Award stay.  I know that we have some plans for a European trip in late summer, so you can better believe we’ll be making some Radisson stays for that trip before this benefit expires
  • There have been reports of a one-time 30,000 bonus point offer on your next Club Carlson stay. It came out in the email announcing the change to some people (not in mine) but the reports I have seen say that it is open to all Club Carlson members.  Unfortunately for me (or fortunately?), my current stay, like most of my stays, is an award stay and is thus not eligible.  Still, 30,000 points might be worth mattress running.

What about you?  How does this affect your points?  Making any good redemptions?  If you have the card, are you planning on keeping it?
