It’s….. BACK! I first read about this on the excellent Miles to Memories blog – it’s More free money at Staples this week, starting today. As always, I prefer to announce this as a Mad Lib, because these deals are pretty much all the same, with a few minor changes.
Solve the Mad Lib
Save _____ (amount) when you buy _______ (purchase amount) in _______ (type) Gift Cards at _______. Refund will be given in ___________
This time, the Mad Lib answers are:
1) $15
2) $100
3) VISA, Mastercard, or American Express
4) Staples
5) Staples gift card
In case you didn’t follow along, if you buy $100 in Visa, Mastercard or American Express gift cards this week at Staples, you’ll get a $15 Staples gift card, by Easy Rebate (limit 1 per household). Here’s next week’s weekly ad (it’s on page 1).
How to maximize the Staples free money deal
Because you get your gift card by mail via Easy Rebate, it’s not a super attractive deal, as there is no way to scale it. On the positive side though, maybe that will mean that the $200 cards actually stay in the store more than a few hours 🙂
My preferred order would be Visa, Mastercard, then American Express as sometimes the Mastercards don’t work as well when trying to load at Walmart (if manufactured spending is your thing), and American Express cards are just generally harder to liquidate.
Definitely I would recommend using a Chase Ink or other card that gives 5x points on office supply stores. I love the Chase Inks for exactly this reason, not to mention the fact that you can get 2 free airport lounge visits – read our report of the Club at ATL that we got into for free!
I would also recommend a $200 card (if they have them) – the activation fee is $1 more, but IMO that is worth the 500 extra points you’d get. Plus purchases of over $200 are eligible for a 1% rebate with Visa Savings Edge.
Doing the math
If you find and buy a $200 Visa card, you’ll spend $206.95, but then receive:
- $200 back on the actual card
- $15 Staples gift card in the mail by Easy Rebate
- $2.07 as a statement credit through Visa Savings Edge
- 1035 Chase Ultimate Rewards
Definitely worth a stop to Staples this week!!
