CLEAR and Delta have teamed up to give Delta cardholders access to CLEAR membership at a discounted rate.  Typically, you’ll shell out $179/year for the security service.  This partnership offers Delta cardholders the service at a discounted first year rate of $109.  That’s a savings $70 (or almost 40%) for your first year!

While the email I received appeared to be targeted to Boston area fliers, the application link itself seems open to anyone with a Delta frequent flyer number.  Be warned though, the terms state the discount is only for current Delta cardholders:

  • CLEAR is currently available to US citizens, legal permanent residents, and citizens of US territories, 18 and older with valid photo ID.
  • All SkyMiles Program Rules apply.
  • *Preferred rate is limited to Basic Card Members (not Additional Card Members) with the Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card, Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card, Delta Reserve Credit Card, Gold Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card, Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card, and Delta Reserve for Business Credit Card.
  • To review the rules, please visit SkyMiles Membership Guide & Program Rules.

In order to get your CLEAR membership at the discount, first apply online through the special Delta partner link.  Once your initial application is approved, you’ll be required to go into a participating airport to complete your enrollment.

What is CLEAR?

CLEAR is a service that tries to simplify the identification process at the airport. Even if you have TSA PreCheck, the agent will still need to verify you.  Your name on the ticket must be the same name on your ID, and you must match the picture.  CLEAR gets rid of all of this, opting for biometric screening.  In their own words, you can get through security, “with just the tap of a finger or blink of an eye“.  Comments on Big Brother aside, I’ll take anything that speeds up the airport process.

This isn’t the first time CLEAR has offered a discount, they’re clearly trying to grow their userbase.  They’ve also grown their locations significantly in the past few years.  As of this writing, CLEAR has security checkpoints 50+ airports and stadiums, including Boston Logan International Airport, Las Vegas McCarran International Airport, JFK, La Guardia, and Westchester County Aiport in the New York area.  The Delta partnership makes sense, as CLEAR currently serves many of their major cities – Atlanta, Detroit, Boston, and others.

Personally, I bet we’ll see CLEAR partner with some credit cards soon.  Until then, I won’t be getting it, even though they’re now at my home airport of Boston Logan.  Do you guys have CLEAR?  What do you think?
