Let’s start with this: there’s a lot of civil unrest in Hong Kong on the weekends right now. The State Department hasn’t raised the travel advisory level above normal, but I would be aware of the political sensibilities there and any problems you may encounter. That said, if you want to visit, United has a fantastic deal for a week-long vacation: $359 round trip, direct flights in main cabin economy. That is the lowest price I’ve seen all year, including any number of layovers. This price is available in August and September; if you can’t leave quite so soon, prices for 1-stops are right at $500 from October through March. American is also offering directs from Los Angeles on scattered dates at $500, though 1-stops at that price are more common. The 1-stop prices are good for Thanksgiving, but not Christmas, and extend to next spring.
As noted, these are main cabin fares. That means seat choice and 2 checked bags are included. That makes the San Francisco fare tough to beat. These book directly through the airline. Again, I cannot predict what affect the unrest in Hong Kong will have for tourists, though the US government seems to consider it a relative non-issue. So go with caution but act quickly on the direct, because as we near the departure dates those won’t last long at all.
