A few months ago, we talked about 2 transfer bonuses. Â One of those (Amex 50% to Iberia) ended a few months ago, but the other one ends this week. Â So in case you missed it, or meant to transfer points and forgot, consider this your reminder.
While I always suggest starting with your destination in mind first BEFORE just signing up for credit cards, if you are going to just sign up for credit cards, signing up for ones with what we call “flexible” currencies is a smarter move than locking yourself into a specific currency. Â The advantage of these flexible currencies (like Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards or Citi ThankYou points) is that they can transfer to a variety of airline and hotel partners, so you’re better insulated from possible currency devaluations
Citi ThankYou points 50% bonus to Hilton HHonors
The other 50% bonus is Citi ThankYou points transferring to Hilton HHonors.
Normally you get 1500 Hilton HHonors points for 1000 ThankYou points, but for a limited time you can get 2000 Hilton points.
This isn’t one that I’d recommend unless you have a specific Hilton redemption in mind because generally I’d value ThankYou points at more than 2 times the worth of a Hilton point. Â We stayed at the Category 2 Doubletree in Johor Bahru Malaysia (10,000 points) and it was amazing

In order to get the bonus, you’ll need to transfer before 11:59 p.m. ET on February 8th (Wednesday)

Uh, 50% of 1500 isn’t 500.
We went back and forth with several people last time a deal like this came out. IMO at least, there are several ways you can talk about what percentage this bonus “should” be. How I interpreted it is that normally 1000 TYP gets you 1500 Hilton points (50% more). Now, 1000 TYP gets you 2000 Hilton points (100% more). I’d also accept that normally you get 500 extra points and now you get 1000 extra points (100% more). Or, 33% more (2000 instead of 1500)
A “50% bonus” is a bonus of 50% of whatever you are getting. If I normally sell candy bars at 4 for a dollar, selling 5 for a dollar is not a 100% bonus (on the grounds that I get 100% of an extra candy bar); it’s a 25% bonus. Or a 20% discount. Similarly, the Hhonors points are a 33% bonus, or a 25% discount. And since, as you point out, they are about 250% overpriced to begin with, that isn’t enough to offer value.
Shame we don’t really know how the revamped Hilton Honors program is going to work. Only with those details can you really make a forward judgment. If, as Hilton imply, some hotels will cost appreciably less in points in off peak times, there may be real value in grabbing the 33% bonus. Not sure where they get 50% from.
