Aside from New York, it’s often hard to find an eastern U.S. city with good prices to Tokyo. But there’s a minor fare war in Miami, plus great discounts from several other cities, with discounts from $300 – $700 below normal. These are main cabin fares, meaning seat selection and checked bags are included on top of carry-ons. Layovers on the way to Japan vary, but I found numerous that were as short as 1 – 2 hours meaning you’re not going to spend an extra day sitting around airport to take advantage of this deal. If you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve, you can use your Ultimate Rewards (UR) points in the Chase travel at a value of 1.5 cents each. That makes round trips ~50K points, or roughly 18K fewer points than miles Delta is asking in their current awards sale. Discounts from eligible cities, with options noted, include:
- Philadelphia from $710; 47K UR (from Delta; 2 week stays price at $543), limited dates Sep – Dec
- Miami from $771; 52K UR (American, Delta, and United), widely available Sep – Mar
- Boston from $776; 52K UR (Alaska and Singapore Air), limited dates Sep – Mar
Stays are 3 – 10 days for the best prices, but change from month to month and by route. These flights are often on partner airlines (American – Japan Airlines, United – ANA), who offer excellent trans-Pacific experiences. And, again, these are main cabin economy, so bring the bags and sit with your family. Given these discounts prices may not last long so move fast for the best prices.
