For many years, Marriott and United Airlines have had a reciprocal relationship: Marriott Platinum and Platinum Premier received United Premier Silver status and United Global Services, Premier 1K, Premier Platinum, and Premier Gold members received Marriott Gold status.
Last week, The Point Guy reported that Marriott and United had changed the relationship, allowing Marriott Platinum Premier members to receive United Premier Gold Status, rather than Silver. Marriott Premier will still retain United Premier Silver status. This will help to differentiate the two Marriott status levels.
What’s the Difference?
For Platinum Premiers, the upgrade to Gold over Silver is nice, but the changes are minimal:
Besides the changes listed above, Gold members also get discounted or waived same-day flight changes.
Conclusion
As mentioned above, while the changes are minimal, they are a welcome benefit, especially when you’re getting it for free. Also, it seems like Platinum Premier is invite only, and after you have at least 150 nights in one year. Remember to request your complimentary United benefits from United here.
Any Marriott Platinum Premiers out there? Is this a welcome surprise for you?

I am already Marriott Platinum and United Gold – so this means nothing to me. A shame actually.
this is welcome news to me. i always found it unfair that UA elites got marriott gold (and now platinum) but marriott elites only got UA silver. the main benefit of airline elite status for me is lounge access, which UA silver doesn’t give.
As a Platinum Premier member for the last three years, I can tell you that tier was upgraded to United Gold previously. Strangely enough, we get United Silver cards in the mail first and then Gold shows up a few weeks later.
