SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) has periodically offered a promotion where kids fly free on flights between the US and Europe and it is back again as of September 2019
(SEE ALSO: (Up to 8!) kids fly free to Europe!)
The details
Children between 2 and 11 years who are traveling with an adult pay only the taxes and fees on trips from the US to Scandinavia (Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Denmark) and Finland.

You have to book by 27 September and the Travel period is 1 Nov–1 Dec 2019, and 8 Jan–25 Mar 2020*.
The catches
There are a few catches with this, as I discussed last time. First of all, you do have to travel with an adult – unaccompanied minor tickets are not included. Even though you can fly with up to 8 kids free on one adult fare, it’s only valid for children under the age of 12, which unfortunately rules out several of my children.
But the biggest catch for me is that you have to fly on only SAS “metal”, meaning no codeshare flights. In effect. this says that you have to live in or travel to one of SAS’s US hubs (Chicago, Los Angeles, Newark, Boston, San Francisco, Miami, Washington). I can buy a flight on SAS from my home of Cincinnati (CVG), but because it has a United codeshare from CVG to the international gateway, it will NOT be eligible for this promotion
Also the kids tickets are not COMPLETELY free as they still have to pay the taxes and fees on the ticket, which usually end up being about USD$60-80 per kid.
Some examples
Here is an example of tickets. These are from the last time, but the prices and fees should be similar. Check SAS’s low fare calendar to find dates that work best for you.
Here’s another one to Copenhagen with the full 8 kids along
9 tickets to Europe for $1116.26… not bad! ($124.03 per ticket r/t)! Unfortunately this is not as useful for people who a) have older children, b) fly with a spouse or other adult or c) don’t live in a city with a SAS flight. Tragically I check all 3 of those boxes, so even though this seems like the perfect promotion for me, it ends up not being that great.
I could not find a page on SAS’s website where it listed the fine print on this sale, though it did appear that this offer is valid on both economy and economy plus and only on roundtrip fares (one way flights were pricing at full price)
As a side note, SAS’s website is really bad….

I am thinking about it. But I have one kid who is over 11. Sad. When I priced it a year ago with all my kids under 11 it was a great deal. Having one over makes it not really that great of a deal.
Tell me about it… 🙂
We booked Oslo for March. Now, we have to figure out what to do in bitter cold for 7 days. Any suggestions? Our son is 4.
How do you book. I see your blog post about it but no way to actually book
Book directly with SAS – flysas.com
Great for a school trip.
Even if you live near one of the gateways it might only be a good deal if you take 3 or more kids.
