Okay, okay – I admit it. I’m a sucker for checking things off of lists!
Today’s list comes from TravelChannel.com and is the “50 Landmarks for the 50 states“. It’s a 50 state slideshow (in the order each state got statehood, with their pick for the “best” landmark from each state (though I’m not sure how Louisiana got to be #1?!?!) 🙂
Here are the ones that I’d been to:
- Mystic Seaport, CT
- Plymouth Rock, MA
- Wright Brothers Memorial, NC
- Willis Tower, IL (pictured below out on the overhang ledge)
- Gateway Arch, MO
- Golden Gate Bridge, CA
- Las Vegas Strip, NV
- Mt. Rushmore, SD
- Old Faithful, WY (those last 2 on the same trip in 2015!)
- Salt Lake Temple, UT
- Statue of Liberty, NY – A 10 year old’s top 10 things to do in New York City
- Space Needle, WA (pictured above)
That’s 12 – though I’ve been pretty close to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the Kentucky Derby is on my bucket list. I haven’t been to my own state’s “top” landmark (which is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum). I blame the fact that it was built after I already left Cleveland.
We do have Sam’s report on the Mt. Washington Auto road (New Hampshire’s pick) and Ian’s 5 tips for visiting Crater Lake (Oregon’s pick)

So what do you say? I’m sure someone out there can top 12 – let me know in the comments

Six. A few others I’ve seen in person bunt not been to/inside of.
Eight. Have to get going on the others!
Fourteen. And a few more added to my bucket list!
14 Also. And several planned for 2016.
Though I’m not sure I agree with them all. Seems like Arizona should be Grand Canyon. Kentucky should be a place – not an event. And Utah should be one of the magnificent parks (Arches, Zion, Canyonlands, Bryce, etc.).
Six. Delaware, NJ, NY, Pennsylvania, Hawaii, West Virginia.
Havasupai Falls is also on my bucket list. I am surprised Kentucky wasn’t Mammoth Caves (been there) and Florida wasn’t either Disney World (been there) or the Everglades (haven’t been there).
Yeah – I have also been to the Everglades – it’s a world heritage site people!!! 🙂
20–one of the best that I recently added was the Ford Museum in Dearborn. Wonderful place to visit. We went to Greenfield Village and went on the Ford Factory tour too. Well worth a few days.
Of the others I have been to, probably Havasupai Falls was probably the hardest to get to. Not a hard hike but it was about 8 miles. Most of the drop is in the first mile or two and then pretty level walking to the village and then on to the falls.
We went on a long driving vacation this year and could probably have added another couple from this list had I known about them.
Thanks.
I think you might have been to the Buffalo River in AR if your county map is correct. You probably drove over it in hwy 65.
Are you a Browns/Cleveland fan? I see you rockin’ that GV…
Unfortunately yes, I’m a Browns fan 🙂 I’m from Cleveland originally but live in Cincinnati now
Total of 14, will increase to 16 later this year.
24, but I was generally pretty strict. For instance, Havasupai (sp) Falls is pretty close to the Grand Canyon. Though I have been to the Grand Canyon a few times, I have never been to the falls, so I did not count that one.
But there were a couple of exceptions:
– The last time I was at the “Willis” Tower was when it was the “Sears” Tower.
– West Virginia had a picture of the New River Falls bridge, and I’ve been there a number of times, and that whole “150th” thing was strange, so I counted it.
My number is only 11. I thought it would be much higher since I’ve road tripped across the States at least three times. I guess I didn’t visit the “right” things in each state, even my own Arizona!
i have been to Alcatraz but i forgot to take pictures
