This is a short post but I wanted to share an experience I had a few weeks ago while driving in West Texas and South Texas. I had a conference in San Antonio, and since my dad lives in Houston, I thought I might fly in to Houston, stay a few days, then rent a car and drive to my conference.
And since I am trying to visit every county in the United States, this would be a good opportunity to pick up some new counties (48, as a matter of fact).
SOME people say it’s only a 3 hour drive from Houston to San Antonio…
Murdering Butterflies In South Texas (or West Texas?)
But I noticed something somewhere around Laredo. As a non-Texan, I am not sure if this is South Texas or West Texas (or South West Texas), but I am sure someone will correct me in the comments!
As I drove along, I noticed that my windshield was getting REALLY dirty. Then when I got out to stop / get gas / use the bathroom / eat, I noticed HORDES of butterflies in the air, and I realized that my windshield was getting dirty because I was hitting hundreds if not thousands of butterflies.
I couldn’t tell at the time if they were moths or butterflies (or what kind they were), but not only my windshield but the grille of my car was COVERED.
To the point that I was nervous that Budget Rent-a-Car was going to have a problem with me dropping off the car this way. I tried to stop at a gas station to clean it off but it did not work. I thought about trying a car wash but ended up not bothering.
The Bottom Line
Thankfully I had no additional charges to my rental car, and I was able to escape that without any consequences. I did feel a bit bad about all the butterfly murder but I don’t think there was anything I could have done? I felt like George Costanza from Seinfeld with the pigeons – “WE HAD A DEAL!”
Do you know what’s going on with these butterflies in Texas? Leave an explanation in the comments below
