If you have a family of five like I do, you probably know finding hotels for large family is not an easy task, especially if you want to redeem points for the stay. The job gets even harder when you have a family of eight like Dan does!
Hotels for a large family
Have you ever tried to squeeze your large family into a hotel room that is meant for four? If you have, you would know that arrangement simply makes the stay uncomfortable. You are bound to hear kids complain! Whenever my family vacation in Mexico, we usually stay in a two-bedroom-two-bathroom unit at timeshare resorts. We all love the space! But domestically, it is a bit more challenging to find hotels that could fit a family of 5 to 8 people. Here is a short list of hotels with big rooms and free breakfast:
- Hyatt Place
- Hyatt House
- Residence Inn by Marriott
- Homewood Suites by Hilton
- Home2Suites by Hilton
- Embassy Suites by Hilton
- Staybridge Suites by IHG
- Holiday Inn Express & Suites by IHG
Most of these brands have rooms with two beds plus a sofa bed that can fit 5 or 6 people. Some even have two bedroom suites with full kitchen that can fit up to 8 people, and several of those are on the list of hotels that give dinner for free as well. Because they are part of a hotel chain, you can often redeem points for a free stay!
Each hotel chain also operates vacation ownership properties (aka timeshare). Vacation properties often have two bedroom units that can easily fit a family of 8. But most of the time you can not redeem loyalty points, or it requires a ton of points for just one night. If you are willing to pay cash, you can always consider renting a week from timeshare owners (the best source is probably Redweek).
- Marriott Vacation Club
- Sheraton Vacation Club
- Westin Vacation Club
- Hyatt Vacation Club
- Holiday Inn Clubs Vacation
- Hilton Grand Vacation Club
- Wyndam Vacation Clubs
Awesome redemption of hotels for large family
Believe or not, sometimes I choose our vacation destination based on what hotel accommodation I can find. I do not want to pay for two rooms if I can avoid it. A few years back, after spending Christmas in southwest Florida with my in-laws, we took the high-speed ferry from Fort Myers beach to Key West and spent five wonderful nights there. The trigger? Sheraton Suites Key West had rooms that fit all five of us at 12,000 points per night, and 5th night was free! It would have cost us well over $500 a night because our stay included New Year’s Eve. One summer we made a three-day detour to Ocean City Maryland on our drive from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. We did that because I found Holiday Inn Suites for 35,000 a night and the non-fancy room fit all five of us just fine!
Below is a list of hotels that not only fit a large family, but also offer tremendous value for your points! Some of these hotels my family or Dan’s family have been, while others I learned through my trip planning. Have you ever used points at any awesome hotels for your large family? If so, please share with us in the comments below.

I don’t have a large family to travel with but often travel with a couple of friends and we each like having our own bed. While we can do a rollaway, having the sofa bed at a Hyatt Place/House or Residence Inn plus the free breakfast puts them at the top of our lists.
Family of 5 here–this post is a great resource! I planned our Spring Break around a hotel that fits all 5 of us in one room, the Sheraton Sand Key. We have had good luck finding Hyatt Place hotels near our vacation destinations–including Hyatt Place Daytona Beach and Hyatt Place Queens/Flushing for 12k each.
Nancy, I looked at Sheraton Sand Key earlier because we will be in Tampa area for Christmas. But to accommodate 5 people you need a queen suite there which I guess cost twice the amount of points on a regular room. 20K a night is bit more than I am willing to spend though.
We were able to book the Sheraton Sand Key for 5 people for only 10k points a night (8k per night for 5 nights). The hotel brings a rollaway for the 5th person. I’ll let you know how it works out–we’re going there in about 5 weeks.
Oh I didn’t know their two-queen room would fit a rollaway! Yes please let me know. I like that the hotel is on the beach!
We’ve stayed at the Doubletree Suite Times Square on free night certificates. The room was good sized, huge for NYC.
Have also stayed at the Holiday Inn Suites Ocean City, MD, again on free night certificates. Often this property requires minimum stays during high season. Good location, nice pool, huge bathroom.
We tend to go with Residence Inn nearest Disney and get one of the 2 bedroom suites to accommodate extended family. Nice to have 2 bathrooms. Great location and price. Tolerable breakfast. Needs an update, but meets criteria as a place to sleep after a long day at Disney.
We’ve been meaning to try the Holiday Inn Orange Lake on our next Disney trip, but worry about timeshare presentations and extra resort fees. Does anyone have experience there?
If you book using points for the Orange Lake resort, you shouldn’t be required to attend timeshare presentation. Just firmly say no! I actually own a timeshare week #51 (usually Christmas week) there. For the past 17 years I mostly traded it for other resorts (mostly in Hawaii and Mexico). But we are going there this year and we are staying at the River Island Village. The two-bedroom units on points are most likely in the west village, the original section which has been remodeled. The resort is quite convenient to Disney World and also have a Publix right at its entrance.
I’m planning a small X-mas family reunion for the first time in 7 years with my two single adult children who are on overseas assignments.
Would someone please have a recommendation in California for 4 adults on points ?
TIA
Where in California? It is a rather big state. 🙂
Preferably somewhere on the ocean, but basically any place (except in the Disneyland area) that offers outside (sporting) activities in warm weather for adults will be great.
i.e. Napa area and beaches in S-Cali.
Thanks !
For Napa Valley, there are 16 hotels you can use points https://www.pointswithacrew.com/stay-free-16-hotels-napa-valley-using-points/
For beach, you will need to go to southern CA as the beach up north is freezing year-round. Look into San Diego area, especially La Jolla. Hyatt Regency La Jolla is 15K per night, Sheraton La Jolla is 10K per night.. there are other choices too.
@ Sharon
Many Thanks – it’s really appreciated !!!
