Here’s some news and notes from around the travel world that you might be interested in:
- Sometimes it feels like we’ve heard it all when it comes to emotional support animals. People have successfully brought pigs, ducks and even monkeys on planes. Most recently though is this story of a poor hamster who didn’t quite make its flight. See also: A Case Against “Emotional Support Animals” on Airplanes
- Last month, Jon, over at No Mas Coach, had a run in with some lying front desk agents. I’ve been lied to a couple of times at check in so it was nice to hear that I’m not the only one it’s happened to. See also: Today A US Postal Worker Lied to My Face
- Generally travel is quite safe. Have you ever thought about what you would do if someone dangerous entered your hotel lobby?
- A child’s second birthday can ben an expensive milestone for parents who have been traveling with a lap infant. MommyPoints shares how one Australian family learned a particularly expensive lesson on a recent trip to Bali.
- Sometimes, public transportation really is the best way to get around. Even the Queen of England uses it sometimes!

As with everything, people push the envelope and ruin things for everyone. Think of a simple thing like a speed limit. The posted speed is the maximum allowed yet people push it to 5,10,15,20 etc. Police in my city won’t even stop unless it’s 15 or more over, and this is in a 30mph area. That’s 50% over before they act.
That is an interesting way to think about this issue! It’s going to be interesting to watch and see what happens as more and more airlines start to implement new restrictions.
I’m waiting for somebody to write the case for emotional support for passengers….. Seats are becoming more and more claustrophobic. Passengers are getting “bigger”…. I have nightmares still of the cross-country red-eye flight from hell, on Delta, where I was on a window seat trapped next to two-ton Bubba…. who was hanging half his lard into the aisle… (2-3 configuration)…. Was all I could do not to go bonkers, counting the seconds til landing in ATL.
I generally like pets, animals and all that…. But I also have a deathly fear of dogs….. of the dogs who tore my beloved Sparky to shreds when I was just 9…. I know the shrinks tell us that dogs can sense our fear, and that when we pass them on the sidewalk, we’re to be calm, not let them sense our anxiety — lest they get anxious and…. snap.
I now dread the thought of being parked on a flight of any length next to somebody’s doberman…. I can keep calm for a few minutes, but what if my emotions get the best of me, then the dog senses that….. then (as has happened), the mut takes my face off?
Where’s my “rights” in all this? Do I have a right to request a different seat – nowhere near anybody’s fido bin terror? And what about folks (like half my family) with documented allergies to certain animals — like cats? Do they have any rights?
I’ve been on Southwest flights where they don’t serve peanuts cuz one passenger on the plane had an allergy to nuts….
What about with animals? How did this insanity get started?
ps, just enjoyed Ian Snyder’s case against essay from last summer (thanks for posting that link). Alas, seeing the “passion” of those defending the ESA’s in the comments therein reminds me of how…. much ‘merika has gone to the dogs in my lifetime. And so it goes.
I’m glad you enjoyed Ian’s post! I think I need to do a little research into how to handle animals on planes if you have an allergy. I know my nephew has severe pet allergies and they try to drive far more often than they fly.
I like animals but very afraid of dogs. I was told that their dogs did not bite me several times but still bit me. That is why I will NOT believe dog owners telling me they do not bite.
Really sad that they abuse “service animals”, so they can bring their pets to everywhere, even to human businesses,….. okay to animals businesses like Petsmart, Pet Supermarket, etc…..
My hubby has flea bites allergy.
We are glad we no longer fly any more.
