In late 2024, my dad, sister and I spent a week or so in Europe (mostly Germany and Italy). I was in charge of booking (most of) the transit as we went from place to place. I booked the three of us on American Airlines Business Class from Dallas to Frankfurt (both of their first time flying business class), and also booked us on an Air Dolomiti flight from Munich, Germany to Florence, Italy.
Air Dolomiti is owned by Lufthansa and seems to be a bit of a low-cost carrier going mostly to/from Italy. Because they fly small planes and seemed to serve a bit of the low-cost market, I was not sure if we would have access to any checked bags or rollaboard carryons. I found a bit of information on the Internet about whether Air Dolomiti tickets booked using United miles got free checked bags or carryons, so I thought I would share my experience.
Flying Air Dolomiti Using United MileagePlus Miles
Our Air Dolomiti flights from Munich (MUC) to Florence (FLR) had a cash cost of about $250 each, so it seemed like a no-brainer to pay 6,000 United MileagePlus plus $56.10 each.
We were planning on traveling with just a carryon (rollaboard suitcase) and a backpack (personal item). I knew this wouldn’t be a problem on our international flights (especially since we were flying business class), but I wasn’t sure how it would work on this Air Dolomiti flight. The information on United’s website after I booked the award ticket using MileagePlus miles and the email I got seemed to indicate that we would get 2 checked bags included in the award flight.
Questions About The Air Dolomiti Baggage Policy
But even though I had that assurance, I wasn’t 100% convinced. Air Dolomiti’s own baggage policy seems to indicate that economy fare get 1 cabin bag (personal item since it only weighs 8kg) and possibly one checked bag, depending on the fare class. Nowhere was there a published baggage allowance that seemed to indicate TWO checked bags.
So I printed out my documentation and was prepared to fight about it, but also prepared to have to pay 50 Euros or so to check a bag, if it came down to that.
Do Air Dolomiti Flights Booked With United MileagePlus Miles Get Free Checked Bags?
So, having said that, let me share my report on getting free checked bags and carryons with Air Dolomiti on a United award flight. We made our way to Munich airport early in the morning – we had rented a car in Frankfurt on our arrival to Germany and were returning it in Munich. After dropping off our rental car, we made our way into the terminal building.
Lufthansa has a huge presence at MUC, as you might imagine, and Air Dolomiti passengers are directed to check in with Lufthansa. We had decided to check our bags rather than try to carry them on, because I wasn’t sure if they would be enforcing any size or weight restrictions at the gate. We made our way to the bag drop kiosks. My kiosk was not working for some reason, but both my dad and my sister were able to check their bags without a problem. So I had to take my bag over to the service desk, but they had no problem checking my bag as well.
When we got to the gate for our Air Dolomiti flight with United miles, there was no sizing or weighing of carryons. I saw plenty of people with full-size rollaboard suitcases, and there was plenty of room in the overhead bins for them.
The Bottom Line
Although I was worried when booking an Air Dolomiti flight with United MileagePlus miles that we would not get any checked or carryon bags included, it all worked out fine. My United award ticket got us at least one checked bag for free on Air Dolomiti, and it certainly seems like we might have been able to check two bags. We also would have had no problems with a full-size rollaboard suitcase as a carryon (in addition to a personal item), though we chose to check our bags instead.
Ever used United MileagePlus miles to book a flight on Air Dolomiti? Were you charged for checked or carryon bags?
