I’ve often said that one of the best ways to get a lot of miles and points is through careful and judicious signing up for new credit cards. It can be difficult to earn an appreciable amount miles and points when you’re only counting on your organic spending, 1 or 2 miles at a time. So it can make sense to regularly apply for new cards in order to take advantage of some of the bonuses that are out there. As always, make sure that you are in a financial position to always pay your statement in full and that you don’t apply for a new card just because some guy on the Internet said you should.

Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card Review – welcome offer

First up let’s talk about the welcome offer on the Amex Delta Gold Card. The Delta Gold card currently is offering the ability to:

• Earn 80,000 Bonus Miles after you spend $3,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 6 months of Card Membership

This is worth several hundreds of dollars if you redeem it for travel, not to mention the fact that you’ll get 15% off your award redemptions on Delta (see more below)

Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card Review – earning miles

The Amex Delta Gold Card has the following earning structure:

• 2X miles on dining at restaurants, including takeout and delivery in the U.S.
• 2X miles on groceries at U.S. supermarkets.
• 2X miles on Delta purchases made directly with Delta.
• 1X miles on all other eligible purchases

Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card Review – redeeming miles

The best way to redeem your Delta SkyMiles is using them to book Delta or partner flights. One great feature of the Delta Gold Amex card (and all of the Delta Amex cobranded cards is that you can get 15% off Delta-operated award flights.

So if a particular Delta SkyMiles redemption costs 20,000 SkyMiles, you can get it for only 17,000 SkyMiles. That helps stretch the value of your SkyMiles.

Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card travel benefits

The Amex Delta Gold card also comes with a variety of useful travel benefits, mostly useful when flying Delta.

• 15% off Delta-operated award flights
• Free first checked bag for you and up to 8 other passengers traveling on the same reservation.
• Priority boarding on Delta flights
• 20% savings on eligible in-flight purchases.
• $200 Delta flight credit when you spend $10,000 on your card in a calendar year.
• $100 annual credit for Delta Stays that can be used to book a prepaid hotel stay or vacation rental through delta.com

Who’s Eligible for the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card

One thing to keep in mind is that only certain people will be eligible to get the Delta Gold card (and more importantly, the welcome offer). According to the Amex site, you may NOT be eligible if you have previously had the Delta Gold card, the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card OR the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card. It’s important to note that you ARE still eligible for this card if you have or have had the Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card.

Amex also states that you may not be eligible for the welcome offer for various other factors, including the total number of credit cards you have opened and closed. The good thing with Amex is that if you are not eligible for a welcome offer, they notify you with a popup prior to processing your application so you can withdraw the application

Other Cards To Consider

In addition to the Amex Delta Gold card, here are a few other cards that offer similar benefits that you could consider:

• Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card – Earn 90,000 bonus miles after you spend $4,000 in purchases on your new card in your first 6 months of card membership. $350 annual fee (see rates and fees ). This can be a good option if you’re looking for additional Delta benefits (though it comes with a higher fee)
• Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card – Earn 90,000 bonus miles after you spend $6,000 in purchases on your new card in your first 6 months of card membership. $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $150 (see rates and fees ). The Delta Gold Business card has similar benefits but counts as a business card, and doesn’t affect your eligibility for other Delta Amex cards
• American Express® Gold Card – Earn 60,000 Membership Rewards® Points after you spend $6,000 on eligible purchases on your new Card in your first 6 months of Card Membership. Plus, receive 20% back in statement credits on eligible purchases made at restaurants worldwide within the first 6 months of Card Membership, up to $100 back. Limited time offer. Offer ends 11/6/24. $325 annual fee (see rates and fees). The Amex Gold card earns Membership Rewards points, which you can transfer to Delta SkyMiles or use for other travel purposes.

Bottom Line – Should you get the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card?

The Amex Delta Gold card is a decent introductory card for frequent Delta travelers. You’ll get bonus SkyMiles, a 15% discount on redeeming your miles (helping them stretch further) and decent Delta travel benefits, including a free first checked bag. All this for no annual fee the first year ($150 afterwards).  All in all, it’s a solid card and a good way to increase your balance of SkyMiles. It’s definitely worth getting for at least the first year with the welcome offer – then you can review your usage and decide if it’s worth paying the annual fee going forward.
