UPDATE: Friday July 20th is the last chance to buy Starpoints at a 35 % discount – this is one of the 5 Marriott / SPG things you’ll need to do before August 1st
Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) has a new promotion for buying Starpoints at a 35 % discount. You can access the complete details here – the offer expires July 20th
The current discount is better than the discount offered in the April 2017 promotion and is as far as I know the highest discount I’ve seen open to the general public (some targeted offers have been better). To take advantage of this promotion, you must purchase a minimum of 5,000 points. SPG points usually cost 3.5 cents per point. If you purchase the maximum of 30,000 points, it normally would cost $1,050. With this promotion, you will save 35% and pay $682.50 instead. That is equivalent to 2.275 cents per SPG point.
You can purchase up to 30,000 SPG points per calendar year. The account to receive the points must be opened for at least 14 days.
And why you might want to consider participating
Last year SPG ran a targeted promotion where some lucky members got up to 50% discounts on purchased SPG points. Occasionally they run a 35% off promotion, but 30% seems to be more common. So if you are in need of either SPG points (or Marriott points), you might want to consider participating in this promotion. And this new promotion is open to everyone.
Whether it is a good deal depends on if you have a need for SPG points. The timing of this promotion will be perfect if you are short on either SPG or Marriott points, as SPG points can be converted to Marriott points at 1:3 ratio. This is also an opportunity to purchase Marriott Rewards points cheaply and use them towards Travel Packages. [SEE ALSO – 4 reason to transfer SPG points to Marriott.]
Additionally, you can use SPG points to bid for unforgettable SPG Moments packages, such as for MLB experiences, or Formula 1 racing around the world, or many other annual events such as NHL Stanley Cups Final.
Will you be taking advantage of this promotion?

Thanks for the reminder. I mixed the dates to be July 30 and not July 20. Would have been a Do’h moment!
