Read an interesting article on weather.com. Now normally I think of weather.com as a website that shows crazy click-bait videos and links, and only secondarily a site about actual WEATHER, so naturally we’re here for a third, completely different topic 😛
Anyways, this article is about the Best Swimming spot in every state. From the Devil’s Punchbowl in Colorado, to Dick’s Creek in Georgia, and from Walden Pond in Massachusetts to Lake Monona in Wisconsin, there are some great swimming spots out there!
Naturally whenever I see lists like this, I wonder how many I’ve been to! I’ve been to the following:
- Nevada: Lake Tahoe – we went there as part of the trip where we used 170,000 Rapid Rewards points to take a family vacation to Nevada. The article specifically mentions Sand Harbor, though we were at Kings Beach on the northern part of the lake.
- Rhode Island: Newport.
- Lake Superior – it’s on the list for Minnesota, while I swam in it in Michigan as part of Dive in All Five – my trip to jump in all five Great Lakes in one day (time to cross it off my travel bucket list!)
Here’s the video for our Dive in All Five trip including Lake Superior aka Gitchegummee
I’ve also been to Bear Lake (Utah) but not in it and I’ve been to Lake Erie (Ohio) but not specifically to Catawba Island, so I didn’t count them.
So what about you? How many of the best swimming spots have you been to? Let me know in the comments.

I swim at Catawba Island state park every summer. I live about 10 miles from this park. Another good beach is the city park beach in port clinton. I think you need to bring your crew to Sandusky this summer to ride coasters at Cedar Point. I’m sujre you could find a cottage or condo to rent for a week. A day or two at Cedar Point.
A day at Soak City at cedar point. Visit the liberty flight museum in port clinton. Drive around marblehead peninsula, catawba island and visit the city beach in PC.
A day trip to the Toledo zoo.
These are some of my favorite things to do in northwest Ohio. I’d include the Hollywood casino Toledo but not with kids.
We have not all gone up to Cedar Point together (8 tickets is expensive!!!) but I grew up in Cleveland, so we used to go to Cedar Point when I was a teenager all the time.
I’ve been to Long Beach Island in New Jersey, Treman Falls in New York, and Cape Henlopen in Delaware. I almost ended up at Claytor Lake in Virginia, but it would have been too cold to swim at the time I went.
I would personally disagree with some of the selections and recommend Wildwood in New Jersey, anywhere on the Atlantic side of Cape Cod in Massachusetts and Ocean City (or Assateague Island) in Maryland.
I love the wave action and if you have the ocean I think it’s usually the best option.
Last summer we went to sliding rock near Asheville, NC. I had a blast, but it was too cold for my wife. The water is from a mountain spring so it is always around 50 degrees.
