Earning extra points is easy
With the Double Days promotion, all you need to do is register, and any trip you have planned within the two month window will be eligible to earn double points, as long as you’ve paid cash. I’ve got a couple paid trips coming up in April and May, so I’m looking forward to earning double points on those trips! With these promotions, the math can really work in your favor, especially if you also have the Amtrak Guest Rewards World credit card from Bank of America. Let’s use a trip I have coming up as an example: a $234 Amtrak Acela Business class ticket. That ticket will net me:
- 468 base points
- 117 bonus points (25%) for traveling in Business Class
- 468 bonus points for participating in the Double Days promotion
- 702 points for using the Amtrak Guest Rewards World credit card
In total, I’m earning 1,755 points for one roundtrip fare! That’s almost enough to travel NYC-Philadelphia one way on points!
Conclusion
Even if you don’t think you’ll take an Amtrak trip in the next two months, registering for a promotion like this is a no-brainer! Plans change, and you may find yourself needed to book a ticket, and wouldn’t double points be nice? Again, here’s the link to register for the promotion, and while you’re at it–register for their other promotions too!

great post, Doyan, thanks for the alert. (also aprpeciated your 4-promo. post in Jan) Great to have you “aboard” the pwac stable.
One question: do you know if these extra points from these special Amtrak promotions count towards Amtrak status?
I ask as I’m determined to go for it (status) this year. I’ve been with the AGR program for about two years now, still have the BA card… I gather that the limited rails to AGR “status” include credit card spending (on the Amtrak BA card) and actual personal rail running expenditures. In my case, I’m thinking 20k spend on the CCard for this year (to earn 4k AGR points of the needed 5k for “status”) AND then another 1k in points from $500 in actual paid Amtrak travel (2 pts for each dollar spent on amtrak fares for me)
I gather paid fares for family members won’t count, and yet I’ve also seen various vague AGR references to “special promotions” as also counting towards Amtrak status. (but then I’ve never seen wording on various promos as to whether they will or will not count towards status)
Tested the question last year though with various promos on these fares (including double days, riding NE, etc.) — and they did NOT appear to count towards status. Any experience with this? Recall any promos that actually counted towards status? Or is this a hit or miss, and nobody knows kinda blue-lantern special?
ps: ole’ timers in this space may realize why I am so keen to get amtrak “status.” (It’s a “choice”)
Thanks for the welcome! I went back and checked my prior Double Days earnings, and they did not count towards AGR status–only base points counted. I’m also gunning for Select status this year–I was short by ~300 points last year.
A good “choice” indeed 🙂
and one you (and Drew) taught me back yonder. Time this year to go for the ride. Many thanks to you and (and to Sam for sharing his own experiences)
