One of my miles and points sayings is that it’s important to get your miles and points from several sources. While most of my miles come from credit card signup bonuses, another potentially lucrative source of miles is making your online purchases through shopping portals

All of the shopping portal sites are run by the same company (Cartera), so it’s not really a huge surprise when many of them run similar promotions at the same time. Last year, there were FOUR very similar “back to school” promotions being run at different shopping portals, and it looks like this year is more of the same. It started with just United, and then later last week we had 2 more airlines announce their back to school shopping portal promotions (Alaska and Southwest).
Now it’s American’s turn
American Airlines shopping portal bonus
The American Airlines shopping portal back to school bonus is along the same lines as the other 3 that have already been released
- Spend $350 and earn 700 bonus miles
- Spend $750 and earn 1500 bonus miles
The “Back to School” bonus offer runs from 08/03/16 through 08/21/16 at 11:59:59 pm ET (the “Bonus Period”). So if you haven’t gotten all your back to school shopping done (this past weekend was tax-free weekend in Ohio), here’s a good opportunity. Of course, your shopping doesn’t have to be back to school related at all (for instance the AA portal is paying back 1x on eBay, so if you wanted to take advantage of the recent 8x ebay bucks deal, the AA portal would be a good one to go through!
As a reminder, United, Southwest and Delta are all also offering similar deals with varying amount of bonus miles and spending requred – so check and make sure which one works for you!
