Earning extra points is easy
With the Double Days promotion, all you need to do is register, and any trip you have planned within the two month window will be eligible to earn double points, as long as you’ve paid cash. I’ve got a paid trip coming up in May, so I’m looking forward to earning double points on those trips! With these promotions, the math can really work in your favor, especially if you also have the Amtrak Guest Rewards World credit card from Bank of America. Let’s use a trip I have coming up as an example: two round trip Coachclass tickets between New York City and Utica, NY. These two tickets will net me and my partner:
- 260 base points each (520 total)
- 260 bonus points each for participating in the Double Days promotion (520 total)
- 780 points for using the Amtrak Guest Rewards World credit card
In total, We’re earning 1,820 points for two roundtrip fares! I value those points at $50.78, not a terrible return!
Conclusion
Even if you don’t think you’ll take an Amtrak trip in the next two months, registering for a promotion like this is a no-brainer! Plans change, and you may find yourself needed to book a ticket, and wouldn’t double points be nice? Again, here’s the link to register for the promotion, and while you’re at it–register for their other promotions too!

But wait, there’s LESS !
Sam, I used to much appreciate your Amtrak posts — that you were one of the few bloggers anywhere who kept up with Amtrak — the good, the bad, the ugly — and yes, the charm, safety (….) and quaintness of riding the rails
But this is just an unmitigated puff piece, like you got paid for it. (and that BA apparently reviewed your post before publication)
An honest Amtrak reporter and follower would have noted that Amtrak very quietly dumped its long appreciated ties to AAA — as in no more 10% AAA discounts. (boo hoo)
How about an Amtrak essay that dares to mention any other negatives affecting Amtrak? (like um…. Amtrak’s severely declining on-time performance, broken promises with broadband for passengers on long haul trains, (never mind that even Greyhound now can provide broadband wifi on their new buses….) And then there’s the unmitigated ideological hostility of the new Administration towards all things Amtrak. (most especially towards profitable amtrak routes)
ps, and of even greater concern to the theme of this blog, “points with a crew,” Amtrak also gutted it’s once generous 50% discount program for kids traveling with a paying adult. (now just one per adult; used to be two). They also gutted their discount program for seniors (already suspect as no cooperation with AARP)
And topping it all off, they ENDED the discount program for students. Here in Wahoo-ville, where Amtrak trains can literally have scores of uva students on board each day, THAT will be noticed.
Guess Amtrak calculates with the severe, vicious hostility from Willllbbburrrr and his boss, they had to cut into the bone of the very programs that were making Amtrak profitable.
