- #1-5: A deal we killed, $39,000 in miles and why flight attendants hate Diet Coke
- #6-10: Credit cards I'll pay the annual fee on, getting arrested while travel hacking and a JAL first class trip report
- #11-15: 1,000,000 Starpoints, the world’s most ridiculous lounge, a first class trip report and Hawaii for only 15K
- #16-20: Forfeited Amex points, $900 profit from gift cards, a $1306 check from Aer Lingus, Emirates first class and dressing up in first class
With 2016 coming to a close, we also are coming up on the 3 year anniversary of Points With a Crew, which started back in January 2014. It’s been a great run and I could not be more excited about the future as we look into 2017 and beyond.
Looking back at the top posts of 2016, I thought I’d run a short series of the top posts of 2016 at Points With a Crew. These more or less are the most visited posts by blog visitors in 2016 (only including posts actually written in 2016), and are pretty highly correlated with a list of my most popular posts.
So, without further ado, here are posts #11-15 in the Top PWaC Posts of 2016:
#15 – Meet the man who paid 1,000,000 Starpoints to throw out the first pitch at Game 7 of the World Series – Dan from Dan’s Deals is a big miles and points collector as well as a huge baseball and Cleveland Indians fan. He paid over 1,000,000 Starpoints as an SPG Moment to throw out the first pitch at Game 7 of the World Series and wrote a great recap of his experience. It’s too bad for him (and for me!) that the Indians lost 🙁
#14 – 2016 was the year I first flew first class anywhere in an airplane. It wasn’t the whole crew, but just my wife and I who took a first class trip around the world. We flew JAL First Class from Chicago to Tokyo, then Emirates First Class from Singapore to Dubai (stopover) and then to New York. You can read all about how we booked it, where we stayed and everything else.
#13 – I’ve long said that if you’re going to collect miles and points, your best bet is to do so in one of the “transferrable” currencies like American Express Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou points or Chase Ultimate Rewards. Not only do their multitudes of transfer partners insulate you somewhat from devaluations, they are often adding NEW partners. Case in point, in 2016 Chase added a new transfer partners that offers redemptions to Hawaii for only 15,000 points!
#12 – Speaking of our first class trip around the world, as part of our trip, we got to take a look at the ridiculous Emirates First Class lounge in Dubai, which is so big, it actually runs the entire length of the terminal. Although we had a bit of trouble accessing it (READ: Do NOT try to check-in at 6pm), once we did, it was pretty over the top.
#11 – Another very popular post in 2016 was talking about the mortgage and rent payment processor Plastiq. My post about my experiences paying my mortgage with Plastiq for “free” money has been and continues to be very popular. There have been a few cautionary tales in the comments, but personally my experience with Plastiq has been quite good.
There you have it! Tune in next time for Points With a Crew Top 20 of 2016 #6-10!
