Plastiq is one of a number of services that let you use a credit card for expenses that you typically couldn’t use a credit card for. Â Think rent, mortgage, utilities, etc. Typically these services have a fee on the order of 3%, which makes them IMO not a great deal for anything but emergency spend to meet a minimum spending target.
Enter the Citi AT&T Access More card
The Citi AT&T Access&More card helps make things a little more palatable.  There is currently not a valid signup link, but you can still get the card if you have another Citi card.
I applied for a Citi AT&T Access More card a few months ago and was approved. Â Annoyingly, I only got a $1000 credit line and they would not increase it, even when I offered to move credit line around, and won’t do anything with it until I’ve had the card for at least 6 months.
The 2 things that make the combination of Plastiq and AT&T Access More meaningful are:
- The Access More card gets 3X ThankYou points on “online purchases” which includes Plastiq
- Plastiq is currently offering a fee of only 2.5% for Mastercards, which the AT&T Access More card is
The card does have a $95 annual fee (not waived), and you do also get 10,000 bonus ThankYou points if you spend $10,000 on the card in the year.
My experiences with Plastiq, mortgages and the AT&T Access More card
I have a few rental properties that I own, and for the past few months, I have been paying those mortgages with Plastiq. Â Thankfully I live in the low cost of living Midwest, so even with my sad $1000 credit limit, my mortgage payment is only ~$700 (take that New York City! :-D)
So as an example, I made one mortgage payment with Plastiq for $700, and was assessed a $14 fee.  So I earned 2,142 ThankYou points ($714 * 3).  Since your ThankYou points can be used at a minimum at 1.6 cents per point on American Airlines flights, if you have a Citi Prestige (affiliate link), that $14 fee could be used to book $34 worth of travel on American Airlines.
You can of course, use ThankYou points to transfer to airline partners, such as Air France, which offers one-way flights from the US to Hawaii for only 15,000 points
(SEE ALSO: How to score 15,000 mile one-ways to Hawaii)
But wait, you said “free”?
Yeah, it’s definitely a “free” with quotation marks. Â You CAN use ThankYou points worth 1 cpp to pay your statement. So in the example I posted above, you could use 1400 of your ThankYou points to pay off the $14 fee, leaving you with 742 ThankYou points for no additional cost.
It’s up to you which you value more – personally I have NOT done this. Â But you could if the money is worth more to you thank the ThankYou points.

I don’t think you can use Thank You Points to pay your statement. You can use them at 1 cpp for mortgage payments, but not for statement credits, unless I have completely missed that…
I thought this card only coded as 3x if you labeled a payment as rent on Plastiq. Does it code 3x on all payments sent?
I don’t think it’s 3x on ALL payments, though I have paid 2 mortgages to 2 separate companies and it has counted 3x both times
so far none of my rent payments have gotten 3X on my Access card….any idea why they aren’t getting 3X on the Access ATT card? Also, I have some individuals that I have been paying this way also, and they aren’t getting 3X either. The only 3X that has been coming across on the Access ATT card are actual website purchases.
How are you paying your rent – via Plastiq? I can confirm that my mortgage payments with Plastiq have been getting 3x
So you setup a Plastiq account for free then add your mortgages/rent, pick a credit card to pay with, then you get points from Plastiq and you get points from the credit card company? Is this correct?
Yes, that’s generally the basic idea, though Plastiq doesn’t really give you points. Plastiq charges a fee for paying bills with a credit card, though you can pay some without a fee if you sign up with my link. I would say that in most cases, the points you get from your credit card purchase do not outweigh the fees that Plastiq charges, though it can be worth it in some circumstances.
Not connected with Plastique, but with paying for things which are normally handled through banks, I pay my assessed taxes (being retired) normally through Chase Sapphire, and now through Chase Freedom. This can be done for federal tax through Official Payments: https://www.officialpayments.com/index.jsp?JSESSIONID=9vQmRXRBqdrr6Rh!-653887623!794912343&time=1368887553992
which also takes many state payments. New York opted out of this, but now provides its own credit card option. This of course is a quick way to reach those new card benefits, and although you pay a convenience charge for such payments, they mean much cheaper avios or miles (even cheaper though Chase Freedom).
Oh, and I have opted for my annuity and pensions to be sent gross so that I can pay the taxes myself and hence obtain these benefits.
I have paid rent and other bills I usually pay by check several times, but only when I need to hit a minimum spending threshold. This is typically when I have over-committed my wife and I by picking up too many new credit card offers. Try $9k last year when my wife got her CSP, plus a Wyndham Visa, plus a 50k United Explorer, plus the no-fee Citi Hilton Visa. A bit much for us in 3 months, especially since we don’t MS, primarily due to the inconvenience.
A few other times I paid by Platiq to get Starpoints that I knew I would be using at over 3 cpp. Not a huge return, but it still got us to what we needed for a trip to Europe this summer.
Overall, I think Plastiq offers a really good service.
I pay tuition, mortgage, painter, and babysitter with plastiq. NEVER had a problem. Give it time though and make sure the payment address and account number is accurate!
Thanks for this post – it prompted me to get the Citi AT&T Access More card. I used Plastiq to pay my most recent mortgage payment, and it came through with 3X ThankYou points. This is an easy way to manufacture TY points at a low cost.
Great! I’m glad it was able to help you!
The Barclaycard Arrival+ card gives 2 points for every dollar. No category needed. If you redeem these points for travel or various other charges it will return 5% of the points used. This is a very slim profit in the long run, but an option since the AT&T card doesn’t seem to be available anymore.
Sometimes Plastiq will offer a 1.5% fee on Mastercard payments instead of the regular 2%. I set up my mortgage payments to the expiry of my Arrival+.
For your mortgage payment is the category: “REAL ESTATE AGENTS MANAGER RENTALS” ?
This was the category for my first Plastiq payment. I haven’t received my points yet. Will I still get 3X ty points on this category?
I used the “Rent, Mortgage, and Real Estate” category and it resulted in 3x points. There was no way that I could tell if it would qualify for 3x points until the statement closed. I’m not sure about your category.
Hello, I used the referral link listed above. How long would it take to post the fee-free dollars in my account?
You should see it after your first payment of $20 or more
Good advice. I am the controller at a private club that does not accept credit cards. I refer members/guests that want to use a credit card to Plastiq and it generally takes 5 business days for funding to come through after I receive an email notice of the payment. Works great for me and those that use it seem to like it as well.
Used it to pay my property tax bill, sent on Nov 17th and it is still sent but not complete. Checked the county, my tax is now delinquent. Went back and check the payment, looks like they corp the last digit out from my parcel number. No idea what the hell is going on now other than probably owe another 400 for late fee.
Ugh – that stinks! I’ve never had a problem with Plastiq personally but that really stinks that it happened to you!
question…can I sign up for Plastiq and then enroll a new card (on plastiq) to pay bills with and accrue points on both Plastiq and say a new SW credit card?
Great post. Got the Chase CSR recently and trying to finish meeting min spend. I used it and my mortgage payment went thru in 5 days (even though they indicated 7 days). There is huge bonus from Plastiq lately to use for your minimum spend requirements by using it to pay for your mortgage. You can get $500 FFD (as May 25, 2017). I have been using it as last resort to meet the min spend for my Chase CSR card.
I am new to this. I had used my Visa Card points for several tickets last year and it really worked well. Then I decided to switch to AMEX and missed the 60,000 points because I didn’t start using until after the 3 month mark. I am learning. I ordered the Chase card last week. I was wondering about this Plastiq. I have a business that I pay qtr. taxes and a mortgage. Would that be more feasible to use? If so, should I order now since I just ordered the Chase or wait a period of time?
My travels are taking me from Sav to Lax round trip. Need advice. Thanks!
Linda – generally speaking I would not use Plastiq to pay these at this point unless you’re meeting minimum spend on a card. The fees are too high and are generally more expensive than the value of the points you’d get
DO NOT use PLASTIQ! I had Plastiq account for over a year and initially setting up, they gave me such difficult time as I was paying my rent using credit cards and I rent from private owner not a management firm! So I had to provide my lease multiple times, and even provided cancelled checks and they asked for my lease many times! Anyway, fast forward to this year, as I am trying to meet minimum spend, my rent check arrived late and Plastiq rep stated they would cover any late fees!! I rent from private owner and it’s the same address and also many people have roommates, etc and previously for a year, there were no issues and then out of no-where, Plastiq asked for my lease again and documentation of late fee! Anyway, here is the horror, out of no-where they closed my account and told me you are making “peer-to peer” payments and not rentals! Excuse me, and then I sent them an email, stating that was not accurate and then I contacted them on Twitter and guess what, they blocked me, such horrible service, more on fraudulent side as they didnt want to reimburse me for late fee, then they closed my account out of no where! Such unethical/fraudulent company, be wary and they have no phone support, only chat but previously, they even disabled the chat feature on my account!!! Stay far away!
I’ve been using Plastiq for over 2 years, never had an issue yet!
Does anyone have experience with Urbanr? I was going to try it – they charge 1.5%
Do you still use Plastiq for this?
Unless you have a good chunk of fee-free dollars or are trying to meet a minimum spending target, it’s hard to make it really “worth it” for me to use Plastiq for much credit card spending. I believe you can only pay mortgage via Plastiq with a Mastercard as well
In the last couple of months Plastiq has tighten down and will NOT allow any payments to company unless 1)It has a website or social media page they can find, 2) you can provide them with a link where they can see them on BBB site or on a corporate state page. If they can’t see who the managers are on a corporate site (to make sure it is not you), they will decline payment even if you share with them a contract agreement for payments. So for those new entities who have not setup a site and are delivering services forget about getting paid using Plastiq.
I would like to pay may property tax with my credit card.
