UPDATE: This offer is expired. For active Chase refer-a-friend offers on the Southwest card or any other Chase cards, please see:
The “regular” offer for Southwest credit cards is earning 25,000 miles after spending $2,000 in the first 3 months. I put regular in quotation marks, because it seems like the offer goes up to 50,000 often enough that it seems silly to apply for a “mere” 25,000 miles 🙂
Credit Card referrals
I don’t want this to be a blog that is constantly talking about credit card signups, but I hope that you will indulge me at least a little! It’s actually one of the sore spots in the travel hacking community. There are some bloggers that are viewed as just shills for the credit card companies. I have read commentary from some of the more seasoned bloggers out there lamenting the fact that everything is so focused on steering readers into credit card signups. Frankly, although I can see their point, a lot of it is just too much drama for me so I tend to just ignore that.
The fact is that many bloggers earn a referral bonus for credit card signups that are generated by their blog. In a perfect world it wouldn’t affect the content, but I’m sure that at least for some blogs that it does. But I know for myself, when I signup for new credit cards, I like to go through the referral links of bloggers that I enjoy reading, in an attempt to help support them. I know have gotten requests from readers asking if there were any links that they could use that would support me.
Southwest referral offer
All of that is a long-winded way of saying that I got an email from Chase the other day saying I could “refer” my friends. You get the 50,000 point offer and if you sign up and use the card, then I get 5,000 points. This is the best offer that I know of, and if you are looking to support the blog, I of course always appreciate it.
I have written before about Southwest and the companion pass. I think that Southwest is probably the best airline for getting free family travel, and I have this card and definitely recommend it. Some of the benefits are:
- 50,000 Southwest points (they say that’s good for 2 roundtrip flights but in reality, it’s probably way more depending on how expensive your flights are)
- No foreign transaction fees
- Gets you almost halfway to the companion pass, which lets a companion fly free on every flight you take for up to 2 years
- The advantage of Southwest is that because the points are worth a fixed amount, you can book any flight on points – no blackout dates
So there you have it – if you have been dying to support Points With a Crew and just itching to know the way to do it (right? right? anyone? 😀 ), here you go – Southwest 50,000 point offer. As always, your support is appreciated.

If it’s around in December/November, I’m in. Want to time it just right for maximum companion pass usage.
That makes sense. This offer I think is only good through September but like I said, it always seems to be coming and going…
It’s a bit of a gamble on the timing, I know. But the rewards one can reap if the timing is right…
I do have to decide if I should go for the personal+biz simultaneously, or hold off on what I believe is my one shot at Chase biz card and go for the INK. I’ll probably try to maximize my shot at the INK by sticking with that as my first shot at a biz card, vs. the southwest biz.
It would be naive to say that referral fees don’t affect content to some extent. Everyone responds to incentives, period. That being said, I think it’s possible to balance helping readers and making a modest profit. When you start talking quota, things get tricky, and I hope to never be in that spot. I simply don’t see how your content can stay unbiased when you have to have a certain number of conversions or risk being dumped by Chase. It’s very tough for top bloggers to balance the two.
Leana – I agree with you and as a fairly small blogger that’s not something that I have to deal with. I have no “relationship” with Chase or any bank. It’s probably a bigger discussion than I mentioned here in this post…
I wasn’t aware there were quotas for the guys like TPG and FTG, MMS and others? That explains a lot.
To be clear, I don’t mind supporting via the affiliate links. I don’t see the sense in folks providing their work for free, so I try to support, and I am not one of those persons that straight up freaks out over affiliate links. Gotta stack that cheddar, as the kids used to say.
But, yes, the quota thing specifically explains a lot.
@Cheapblackdad I wasn’t trying to stir controversy, I promise! This industry is extremely tough and bloggers don’t make the rules. The banks don’t need us, it’s the other way around. All the top bloggers would have to go on “strike” simultaneously, and that’s not going to happen in this ultra competitive industry. That is the part the Angries seem to forget. It’s easy to be noble when commission doesn’t pay the bills.
I feel like the current model is unsustainable and is ripe for a change in some way. What that is I do not know so might as well play within the rules as they stand.
In the words of the immortal Ice-T – “don’t hate the playa hate the game” 😛
Well said! I could never argue with Ice-T
