This was a deal a little while back where you could open jaw on Qatar Airlines from several cities in the US to Johannesburg, South Africa, and returning from Johannesburg to several different cities in Europe. Per Secret Flying, it’s back!
(Stopover, layover, open-jaw? What are they and what’s the difference?)
The deal is good for several dates in late 2016 and several different cities. I played around with a few different origin and destination cities and the cheapest I found was starting in Dallas and ending in Warsaw, Poland, for several different dates in November and December 2016
There were fares in the $400 and $500 range leaving from Chicago, Philadelphia, New York and a few other US cities, as well as ending in Amsterdam, Stockholm, Oslo, Paris, Rome and several different European cities. Play around with it to see what works for you!
I did see one question about how you get back from Europe to the US and the answer is…. you don’t! At least not on this ticket – you will need to make your own way back to the US. Which could be a miles ticket (depending on which dates you book and if you book before the upcoming AA devaluation, this is 20,000 miles one-way off peak from Europe to the US), or a low cost carrier like Norwegian Air or WOW Air.

Just wanted to say thanks for posting this. I had seen the Secret Flying notification just as a very quick glance and hadn’t actually read it. Booked $409 BOS-JNB-WAW. Went on our first safari last year. We were watching BBC Africa series last night lamenting how much we missed it. Less than 24hrs later and we have a trip booked for January. Thanks again!
Thanks for commenting! Sometimes it’s hit or miss knowing what kind of posts to publish so I’m glad to know this worked out for you. Enjoy your trip, and drop me a note after you’re back to let me know how it went!!
Good find. Do these cheaper flights have other conditions around it (like baggage restrictions)?
Hi Anand – this is a regular flight on Qatar Airways so it would be subject to their terms and conditions. It’s not a flight on a low cost carrier like Norwegian, WOWAir or Frontier that charges for everything
Losing your life to out-of-control SA crime? Priceless
Thanks ! I enjoy reading your blog and as a small family we fly 95% together. My wife likes to go back to Barcelona for a month or so in August and this was a perfect situation with a perfect flight. Thanks to you.! Sad part is that I will not be able to go with my daughter and wife due to work. What can you suggest they do for the week in JNB. My daughter is 7. I can not wait to see there face when I tell them about going back to BCN that there is a detour…… life is fun.
