Citi is reevaluating its ThankYou Premier card this summer. Get ready for triple ThankYou Points on groceries and dining! Citi recently sent out some information on upcoming changes. Check your email for the subject line “Exciting changes coming to your Citi Premier Card”.
Triple Points on Groceries, Dining, and Travel
Starting August 23, 2020, the Citi ThankYou Premier will earn triple ThankYou points on supermarket and restaurant purchases. The card already earns triple points on air travel, hotels, gas stations, and other travel. You’ll also earn double TYP on Entertainment…for now. You’ll also have an annual $100 rebate on a single hotel stay of $500 or more when booked through Citi’s travel portal. That’s a 20% savings! Not as good as the old Citi Prestige 4th night free, but still somewhat useful.
On April 9, 2021, Citi is removing some of the benefits we’ve come to love on the ThankYou Premier card. From then on, you’ll only earn 1x on “Other” Travel and Entertainment. Your ThankYou Points are also getting devalued – no more 25% bonus on travel redemption values through the ThankYou Travel Center. Your points will all be worth 1 cent, whether you redeem them through Citi for a merchant gift card or for travel.
Are These Changes Good?
Well, from August of this year to April of next year at least, this is all good news. Your card will have extra bonus categories, and won’t lose any of its existing benefits until April 9, 2021.
After that, the answer really depends on your spending habits. Groceries and restaurants are great categories for triple points, but losing the wide range of other travel definitely hurts. If you’re looking for a new card for your entertainment spend, I’d consider the Capital One Savor at 4% cashback on Entertainment.
No matter how you like to use your ThankYou Points, the reduction in booking value is certainly a loss. I tend to transfer my ThankYou Points to other airline partners, so I’m happy there hasn’t been any change there!
Will you keep your ThankYou Premier card?

Why should people “Start Paying for Your Groceries with Your Citi ThankYou Premier!” when the benefit doesn’t start for another 4 months? It completely implies that the benefit starts now.
Thanks Ben, I tried to make it clear in the post, but I updated the title just in case
3x on groceries is nothing special. Many cards give 4x/5x on groceries or 5% cash back.
Citi is trying to make this the card you use for everything by making it a very good all around card. I don’t mind juggling cards but if you didn’t want to hassle with that, it’s a very good option. I personally use the Amex EDP with the Citi Prestige for these categories, but again, if you don’t want the hassle…
