Several years ago, Wyndham became the only major hotel chain to move to a “fixed price” model, where every hotel in the chain (including timeshares!) cost 15,000 points per night. This had the effect that you could get outsized value at more premium locations. When I stayed at the Wyndham Wingate Manhattan, my 15,000 points saved me nearly $300!

Changes going in effect April 3rd

As you might imagine, this one-size fits all strategy was not sustainable, and back in November, we rumored that they might be changing their model. Turns out that was a good rumor, as they announced this morning that starting April 3rd they would be moving to a chart where hotels cost either 7,500, 15,000 or 30,000 points. According to View from the Wing, they expect

  • One-third of hotels to drop to 7500 points per night
  • Most properties to remain 15,000 points per night
  • Only ~ 200 hotels to go up to 30,000 points per night
  • Hotels will be recategorized annually though they don’t anticipate significant shift

I’ll let you decide whether you view the fact that the Super 8 Warroad Minnesota going to 7500 points / night makes up for the loss of being able to book higher end properties at 15,000 instead of 30,000 points.

We do not know which hotels will be changing prices. Since hotel award bookings are generally refundable, I’d lock in any Wyndham redemptions at higher-end properties before April 3rd.

Other Wyndham Rewards changes

There are a few other changes going in place on April 3rd.

Move your La Quinta points over by April 2nd

One last nugget is that April 3rd is also the day that Wyndham will be finally converting over your La Quinta points to Wyndham Rewards points. If you convert before April 3rd, they will convert 1:1, but if you don’t proactively convert, you’ll only get 1 Wyndham point per *2* La Quinta points.

Hopefully you’ve already done that (I have!) but if not, make sure to combine your La Quinta and Wyndham points in the next few weeks.
