Long time readers of Points With a Crew might know that one of the goals on my travel bucket list is to visit all 3,143 counties in the United States. I subscribe to the tenets of the Extra-Miler club, whose motto is
The shortest distance between 2 points is no fun!
After my recent trip to Yellowstone and Mt. Rushmore, here is my current progress to-date
The map is color coded by year of first visit, with reds the oldest and my most recent travels in different hues of blue.
Planning a county trip
A “county trip” is what I call a trip whose specific goal is basically to drive around an area, visiting as many new counties as possible.
- Visiting 3,143 counties
- Central Kentucky County Trip
- NV/ID/OR county trip – 17 hours, 3 kids, no electronics
- Finishing up visiting every county in Utah
- All 88 counties in Ohio in 24 hours (EFOHC)
- [VIDEO] All 67 counties in the 6 New England states in 27 hours
- Minnesota / Wisconsin / Manitoba / North Dakota / Ontario county trip
- Nevada / California / Arizona county trip
I recently decided to join a friend in Minneapolis to use that as a home base to visit a chunk of the northern United States and southern Canada. If all goes according to plan, we should visit 68 counties (including 4 Canadian counties because yes, even Canada has counties 😀 )
That will “complete” Wisconsin for me, which will be my 16th state where I have visited every county (including the District of Columbia).

To help fill in your map, I highly recommend a St. Augustine through Charleston road trip. Plenty of beautiful scenery and family activities.
