We all need a break when it comes to paying at the pump. Some have a favorite gas station. Others fill up their tanks out of convenience by finding the nearest available station. And there are those who will go to the station that offers the lowest price per gallon. It is good to have options, and if there is an option to save a little bit here and there, why not? While the gas prices vary all over the nation, shown below are the states with highest average gasoline prices per gallon, according to Gas Buddy:

Discover has 5% off this quarter for fuel
Great…..thanks, Steve! I edited the entry, and gave you a shout out….thank you!
I use Fuel Rewards and the Fuel Rewards IHG discount (6% for IHG credit card holders). You can score more discounts by loading a MasterCard on file and use the MasterCard at the grocery stores and other retailers offering extra points for purchases.
Great combo and tip. I’ll look into that and check my IHG card….thanks!
Prior to my 2016 retirement, I worked in corporate planning in the refining industry. People often asked me if “supermarket gasoline” (Costco, Sam’s BJs, Kroger, Safeway, etc.) was as “good” as the oil company brands. If you have a fuel injected car, it’s important to keep the injector ports clean. The “detergent” in every gasoline does this but quality differs. With a “bare bones detergent” your mpg may drop over several years and the car may not run properly on 87 octane regular gasoline. Several major brands (Exon, Shell, Citgo, Valero, Chevron, Texaco, Mobil, and even Costco) have met the fuel detergency requirements known as “Top Tier Gasoline” (Google this for details) and developed by several major auto companies. These brands, except Costco, tend to cost more per gallon. But the truth is, if you use a less expensive fuel, and also add some Techron additive or similar a couple times a year, you’ll end up paying the same amount for your fuel as buying one of the Top Tier brands on a regular basis.
Also, if your owner’s manual says to use regular, there’s no advantage from using far more expensive mid-grade or premium.
Just some friendly advice.
Thanks, Chuck, for this detailed advise. We do go to Costco a lot, it’s not that far from where we live. Also, about the last tip in using premium if the car requires regular….my brother said the same thing. They did a similar study during his undergrad work as an Environmental Engineer.
