I like to take a lot of roadtrips (driving).  It’s part of fulfilling my travel bucket list goal to visit all 3,143 counties in the United States.

I’ve taken a 17 hour drive with 3 kids and no electronics, a 25 hour drive to visit every county in Utah, every county in Ohio in 24 hours, and several other “county trips”.  We are planning an Amtrak family vacation this summer

As part of that trip, we are renting a car and driving up to Yellowstone and Mt. Rushmore (more bucket list items!).  Again, this is about 30 hours of driving, but broken down over the course of a week or so.

Enter Roadtrippers.com

Roadtrippers.com is a site that lets you put in an itinerary, give a maximum radius that you’re willing to detour, pick certain categories of attractions (Camping & RV, Entertainment & Nightlife, Attractions & Culture, Sports, Food & Drink, etc), and it will give you a list of attractions that are near your already established route.  The idea is that these would be short detours that you could take on your trip.

Personally, I’m more interested in some of the “off-beat” attractions that give “cool” things that I might not have known about.  Here is my first draft of a summer roadtrip map

Some of those 19 markers are “normal” sounding places, like Mt. Rushmore, or Old Faithful at Yellowstone.  But then there are things that I would not have heard about otherwise, such as: the Center of the Nation Monument, Giant Lincoln statue, Ride the Jackalope, Lost Springs (City with a Population of One), and many more

Ride the Jackalope I believe is listed on the most ridiculous attractions in each state!  Our plan for this summer’s trip is to use these to break up several hours of driving each day.

And a bonus, Roadtrippers is a local (Cincinnati) company, so… yay!

Have you ever used Roadtrippers.com to plan a road trip?
