A few months ago, I wrote about the AirAsia ASEAN pass, which was a new product offered by low-cost carrier AirAsia which allowed for unlimited monthly travel throughout the ASEAN countries (Brunei, Camboida, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Phillipines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam).
In taking a look at Air Asia’s route map, it looks like this could be quite useful to hopping around to different locations throughout Southeast Asia
It’s somewhat of a AirAsia unlimited pass (though it would not include any of the airport taxes and fees, which on tickets like this can make up a pretty healthy part of the ticket price).
According to the original article, the AirAsia ASEAN pass was supposed to come out on January 15th, but I have not seen anything about it yet.
Reaching out on Twitter
So I tweeted out to @AskAirAsia on Twitter

So…. that didn’t say anything really. I looked around on the website (again) and on Facebook, but nothing. I asked again and got a response of
Hi, Thank you for your query and interest on the AirAsia Asean Pass. The product is currently not available for purchase yet and is expected to be made available within the first quarter of this year. We look forward to launch this highly anticipated product commercially and will keep the public posted via our social media platforms. Thank you.
So it sound like the AirAsia ASEAN pass is delayed and not quite available yet. Too bad, since this is the most popular time of the year to travel to Southeast Asia. I will keep you posted on any updates!
UPDATE: The AirAsia ASEAN pass is now live – check my updated post for more details

in light of what you saw in the news lately, your remarks should show some understanding. the airlines is going through one of its toughest tragedy in history and you worry about when the pass will come out. where is your side of humanity ?
Sure – I definitely feel bad for those that lost family members and friends on Flight 8501. I am not taking AirAsia to task for delaying the pass, but I was trying to find out what the status is, since there was no word at all on if they were still planning on offering it at all.
Thanks for looking into this! I blogged about it before the recent tragedy as well (https://rosesontheroad.wordpress.com/2014/11/22/airasia-announces-amazing-offer-10-countries-for-150/) and wondered about an update. Mind if I share your post on my blog?
Thanks! And of course I don’t mind if you share my post on your blog!
I did see the ASEAN pass in airasia website today morning.
10 credits for RM 499 valid for one month from the start of first travel
20 credits for RM 899 valid for 60 days from the first date of travel.
Credits can be redeemed against base fare. Airport taxes and addons have to be outside extra.
10 Asian countries.. Thai.Laos.Cambodia.Philippines.Malaysia.Indonesia….
However I was surprised to see any traces of the link in the evening..
I bought the 10 credit pass on Sunday and tried to use it for 4 flights in April, and not one of the flights had seats available for use with the pass. Completely useless. I then booked the flights with my visa and when I got to seat selection there were very few seats booked. I don’t get, seems like a marketing ploy, no visibility to this issue before I purchased the pass. To top it off, the day after I purchased the flights, they dropped the prices 20% and i still own this useless pass.
Beware, if you are considering the Asean pass
Ugh – that stinks. I’m glad you took the time to share your experiences with the AirAsia ASEAN pass. Be sure to come back and let us know if you are able to use the pass at all.
It seems at least 1 other person has the same issue as well: http://www.tripadvisor.com.my/ShowTopic-g1-i10702-k7965275-o30-The_new_Asean_Air_Pass_Air_Asia-Air_Travel.html
No seats when using the Air Pass, but when using normal booking, can find seats!
That’s pretty horrible!
I booked the 20-credit pass and booked 11 flights over a 30 day period to travel around South East Asia. I saved almost 50% over buying individual tickets, but it wasn’t easy due to availability and limitations.
I have posted Top 10 tips to make it work here: http://dreamtravelonpoints.com/2015/03/top-10-tips-to-make-the-most-out-of-the-airasia-asean-pass/
If you are flexible with your dates and destinations, this can be a great way to explore SE Asia! Good luck!
The Asean pass has been live for a while now, but there are some major problems with the pass. I am having to completely replan my SE Asia trip because many of the routes listed in the Asean pass table are not available when trying to redeem credits. I also had trouble with payments with the pass. The customer service has been less than optimal as well. If any of your readers are experiencing problems with the Asean pass, I have written a blog post which could help out at http://www.yourtravelpath.com/archives/479. Keep up the great work!
