So when we were waiting in the Amex Centurion Lounge at Las Vegas airport, after we figured out the simple trick to zip through a 45 minute wait at security, I noticed a sign near the pancake syrup in the lounge.

It was directly above the only syrup at the buffet, but the punctuation was throwing me off.  Did the sign mean:

a) The syrup in question was sugar free, but it was only available to actually USE if you requested it

b) Or perhaps (just maybe!) that this was regular syrup but sugar-free syrup was available upon request

I feel almost certain that the lounge actually intended b), but the way it’s written it reads as a).  It reminded me of the book Eats, Shoots and Leaves, where they talk about the difference between:

  • The panda eats shoots and leaves (commenting on the diet of the panda)

and

  • The panda eats, shoots, and leaves (destructive post-consumption panda behavior!)

eats-shoots-leaves

Grammar is important, people!! 🙂  I hope this at least gives you some smiles this weekend! Leave your biggest spelling / grammar pet peeve in the comments below!
