Earlier this week I was really disappointed to learn that Japan was not included in AT&T’s new $10 International Day Pass. While poking around JAL website looking up my reservation and ordering meals for my flight, I accidentally found out that I can get two-week free Wi-Fi with JAL for my upcoming first trip to Kyoto!
Two-week free Wi-Fi with JAL in Japan
Apparently JAL has been offering this free service to foreign visitors since mid-2014. Once JAL tickets are confirmed, visitors can apply for the access ID and password for free Wi-Fi connection. After landing in Japan, they should be able to easily find eligible free Wi-Fi access spots around the country.
The service is provided by two of the largest free Wi-Fi service providers in Japan – NTT East (mostly Eastern Japan) and Wi2 Wi-Fi (major cities national wide and installation of TRAVEL JAPAN Wi-Fi app is required).
How to get free Wi-Fi with JAL
Anyone holding a confirmed ticket with JAL traveling to Japan are eligible to apply for the free service. This applies to both revenue tickets and award tickets! Detailed instructions for registration can be found on this page. The process is simple and straight forward.
- Using the record locator number with JAL, go to this page and login to view your reservation.
- Once you are logged in, click the “Free Wi-Fi banner” on the lower right corner of the reservation confirmation page.
- You will be presented the free Wi-Fi service available and redirected to complete the registration.
- Once your free Wi-Fi ID and password are issued, print it and keep it with you.
- The Wi-Fi is good for 2 weeks from the date of activation (i.e. when you first login in Japan).
Conclusion
I cannot wait to try out JAL’s free Wi-Fi service in Japan. Hopefully it will work smoothly for my one-week trip to Kyoto. At the meantime, as a backup plan, I also looked up Starbucks’s free Wi-Fi in Japan and Kyoto City’s free Wi-Fi service, as well as free Boingo Wi-Fi by American Express cards. Between all these free services, I should be well covered, right?! 😉

Thanks for useful tip.
JAL web site two (2) free Wifi services (NTT East and Wi2). But, after completing the registration link I was only able to get a password for Wi2.
Any luck with getting an NTT East Wifi password.
Here’s a link explaining the two Wifi offers. Says you can do both. http://www.world.jal.com/world/en/freewifi/
I saw that too and same thing happened to me – only Wi2 which covers more areas than NTT East. Did you check the coverage of Wi2 to see if it covers the Eastern Japan area that NTT East serves? I does for Tokyo.
I also tried this last year and coverage in Kyoto area was not good.
