Tons of extra airline miles offers right now! Most of the airlines are running the promotions as “back to school” shopping, but its a little early for that in the northeast at least. My son goes back to school on September 4th, so I’ll do my shopping sometime around…the 3rd. If you’ve got some Christmas in July shopping coming up, click through your preferred airline portal first for some bonus miles.
Alaska Airlines Back to School Bonus
Alaska has programmed their bonus in tiers:
- Spend $150, earn 300 bonus miles (2x bonus miles)
- Spend $300, earn 750 bonus miles (2.5x bonus miles)
- Spend $500, earn 1,500 bonus miles (3x bonus miles)
All spend is cumulative, but the points are not. So when you spend $500, you’ll earn 1,500 miles total, not 300 + 750 + 1,500. You have until 8/10/2018 to make the spend, and then they’ll award your miles according to the highest tier you hit. Plenty of time to get working on this one, start here!
American Airlines Back to School Bonus
American is also offering a tiered system, but time is almost up! You only have two more days, until 7/26/2018, to take advantage of their promotion:
- Spend $150, earn 500 bonus miles (3.33x bonus miles)
- Spend $350, earn 1,500 bonus miles (4.29x bonus miles)
Again, spend is cumulative, but you only get points for the highest dollar value you spend. Combine these offers with a good mileage multiplier on some retailers, and you’ll get a great return on your spend! Stop by the American shopping portal to spend some money.
Delta Back to School Bonus
Shop through the Delta portal between July 23rd and July 29th (this Sunday) and earn 500 bonus Delta miles for spending at least $150. Check out the terms and conditions here. Remember the $150 spend is cumulative, and certain items won’t qualify for mileage. Delta is the only airline not offering a tiered bonus system…kind of stingy when you look at the others..
Southwest Semi-Annual Bonus
In true Southwest fashion, they’re offering customers even more time to complete their shopping bonus: until August 19th.
- Spend $125, earn 250 points (2x miles)
- Spend $300, earn 900 points (3x miles)
- Spend $550, earn 2,000 points (3.63x miles)
Like all the other portals, gift cards, returns, and some other items won’t count toward your spend. Start shopping here!
United Back to School Bonus
United is offering the most generous portal bonus out there right now. Up to 5,000 bonus miles for spending $600, and even higher portal rates if you hold the United MileagePlus Explorer card. Read more on the promotion here.
- Spend $150, earn 500 bonus miles (3.33x miles)
- Spend $350, earn 1,500 bonus miles (4.29x miles)
- Spend $600, earn 3,000 bonus miles (5x miles)
These promotions are very common during the summer. Check out last year’s line up here, and plan your purchases for next summer too! In addition to back to school promotions, the major airline shopping portals will typically run 2-3 other promotions, usually once a season. I’ll often time my Christmas shopping with some online shopping portal bonuses, as well as birthday shopping in the spring.
