I got an email the other day offering 10,000 American AAdvantage miles for changing your energy provider to Energy Plus.  This is similar to an offer a few months ago, except last time it was for 12,500 miles.

Energy Plus is apparently only active in the following states: Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

  • Optional service — earn more miles if you enroll a natural gas account
Energy Plus offers natural gas service in addition to electricity service. If you use natural gas to heat your home and choose to add on this optional service, you’ll receive an additional 2,500 miles plus 2 miles for every $1 you spend on the supply portion of your natural gas bills.* You’ll also receive a promotional natural gas supply price that is 5% lower than your utility’s current supply rate for your first 3 months as a new Energy Plus customer. After your promotional period ends, your ongoing supply price will be variable and can change each month. The supply price may be different, including higher, than the supply rate charged by your local utility.*
  • No interruption to your delivery service
The best part is that nothing about how your service is delivered will change. Your local utility company will continue to deliver your natural gas or electricity, read your meter, handle service emergencies and send your monthly statement.
  • For your home AND business
Energy Plus provides natural gas and electricity to both homes and businesses throughout Ohio so you can earn even more AAdvantage miles on all your accounts. There’s no limit to the number of your accounts you can enroll.
  • Select the Energy Plus Green Option
Like you, Energy Plus is committed to contributing to a cleaner environment. Choose the Energy Plus Green Option for your electric account and you can make an environmentally responsible choice to help cut pollution, help reduce your carbon footprint and support renewable energy, while still earning AAdvantage miles.*

Of course… there is a catch

I have switched my electric and gas providers around every couple of months for a couple of years now, and I definitely think that it is not for the faint of heart.  You REALLY need to be on top of things.  Note in the “features” above the part where it talks about the “flexible month-to-month plan”.  This is code for “the time where Energy Plus screws you over”.  When “your ongoing electric supply price will be variable and can change each month“, that is not a good thing for you.

I usually sign up for 3-6 month fixed rates, taking whichever company offers the lowest price and/or best promotion.  Then I set myself a reminder to make sure and update my account when the time frame is up.  A month or two on the “variable” plan will quickly eat up any savings you have.

Last time we had this offer, I was not eligible because I was ALREADY an Energy Plus customer, but I have since swapped, and will likely switch back to Energy Plus for the miles.

What about you?  Have you ever swapped your gas or electric providers for a promotion?  What was your experience like?  Is this an intriguing offer?  Let us know in the comments.
