I don’t always write about every credit card, and as I always say, DO NOT SIGN UP FOR A CREDIT CARD JUST BECAUSE SOME GUY ON THE INTERNET SAYS YOU SHOULD!
But, there is currently an offer on the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® that gives 60,000 American Airlines miles if you spend $3000 in the first 3 months of having the card. There are reports from various blogs and people that are more in the know than me that this offer is changing tomorrow (Thursday July 13th). We don’t know at what time, or what the new offer will be (most people assume lower) or even if the 60,000 mile offer will completely go away.
At the time of this writing, you can find this 60,000 American mile offer on our top credit card offers page (under travel cards).
What to do with American miles?
Finding SAAver space on AAmerican has proven hAArd to do lately but it doesn’t mean that American miles are worthless. Ian had a good article a few weeks ago on 8 ways to use a “worthless” 1,000,000 American miles that gives you a few thoughts
Plus, as we mentioned in our post earlier in the day regarding “constant” signup bonuses, if you are meeting the minimum spend on an offer like this, you’re getting TWENTY AA miles for every dollar you spend – much better than any other regular spend.
Other benefits of the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard®
The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® has a few other benefits besides the signup bonus. Here are a few of them
- Priority boarding and free checked bags
- 10% rebate on award redemptions
The 24 month rule
Unfortunately, this card does have the language in the application indicating that you will not receive the signup bonus if you’ve opened or closed ANY Citi / American Airlines card in the past 24 months.

Does the Citi Aadvantage Platinum Select MC offer trip cancellation insurance ? I didn’t see it anywhere, so I’m thinking it does not. We just booked a trip for next year with the miles that my husband & I earned. Trip cancellation is always a great benefit when you book that far in advance 🙂
Do you foresee AA/Citi will again offer a 100,000 mile sign up bonus on the Executive Card? I have the Platinum Select and I’m waiting for a mileage upgrade opportunity.
Let me consult my crystal ball…. :-). I would say that targeted 100K offers might come back but I can’t see anyway the eminently churnable 100K bonuses of a few years ago would ever come back
Thanks, Dan. Any thoughts on the AA/Citi current purchase offer with up to 100,000 bonus miles (when you buy 150,000 miles) with a 10% discount. I’m trying to accumulate 360,000 miles for three round trip business tickets from LAX to Tokyo. I get the AA/Citi Executive email upgrade offers with no bonus miles. Points with a Crew readers know this is a joke.
Generally I don’t think it makes sense to buy miles / points unless you have a very specific, time-sensitive redemption for it. In your case, compare how much it would cost you to buy the miles vs buy tickets vs other options
