Flying Blue, the loyalty program of Air France and KLM), offers a number of promotional awards on the first day of each month. The typical discount is around 20-25%, but they can be as deep as 50%. Promo Awards are mostly for economy flights, but a few awards in business class are usually available.

Flying Blue May 2017 Promo Awards

Flying Blue May 2017 Promo Awards is now bookable, valid for bookings made between May 1 and May 30, 2017, and for travel between July 1 and August 31, 2017. Unfortunately just like April 2017 Promo Awardthis month’s list is very short for North America and only available in business class for 46,875 miles each way. The short list shouldn’t come as a surprise since the travel period covers peak summer dates. The following routes are available and travel dates vary:

  • Boston to Europe, travel between 7/1/17 – 8/31/17;
  • Mexico to Europe, travel between 8/1/17 – 8/31/17;
  • New York JFK to Paris Orly, travel between 8/1/17 – 8/31/17.

Reservation must be made on Air France or KLM website, except for bookings for children, infants and minors which are not bookable online. Promo Awards are available for one-way as well as roundtrips. Availability is quite excellent. I found at least four seats for many days between Boston and Paris in business class.

You can include in the award a connection to other cities in Europe from Paris or Amsterdam at no additional cost. Also, Flying Blue has a fairly broad definition of what constitutes Europe. You can really leverage this in your favor. Flights to Israel and Morocco, for an example, should all price out as “Europe” awards.

Flying Blue do charge fuel surcharges on its own flights, so keep that in mind when determining if an award is a good deal. For round-trip flights between North America and Europe, expect to pay about $300 in surcharges (and even more in a premium cabin).

Getting Flying Blue miles

Acquiring Flying Blue miles is fairly easy. It is a transfer partner of Citi ThankYou, Chase Ultimate Rewards, and Amex Membership Rewards. Transfers are usually instant. But If you are still concerned, you can hold your award ticket prior to transferring points by calling the FlyingBlue call center.
