One of my miles and points sayings is that it’s important to get your miles and points from several sources. While most of my miles come from credit card signup bonuses, another potentially lucrative source of miles is making your online purchases through shopping portals

United Airlines shopping portal bonus
I got an email from the United shopping portal offering 1000 bonus award miles because I haven’t shopped through the portal in the past 12 months. I would imagine this is targeted but check your email for a subject line of “Shop again and we’ll give you 1000 bonus miles”. I’d imagine this is targeted for people that haven’t shopped in the past 12 months, but if that fits you, check your email. Mine came on September 1st (Friday)
If you’re targeted you need to make your $200 in purchases by the end of the day on September 8th (Friday)
- Spend $200 and earn 1000 bonus miles
That’s 5 extra miles per dollar spent

I put the Plus shopping app on my phone, but it’s an idiotically complicated program. When you shop at a store, then pay with CC via the app, an e-gift card is loaded to the phone, and you show this to the cashier. Sorry, too many hoops to jump thru for me. I refuse to allow United to treat me like a circus animal for a paltry mileage award, especially after they screwed us with an old, broken, 777-200 on a Feb 2017 vacation from IAH to HNL. What was supposed to be an 8-hr nonstop became a 1-stop change planes in SFO nightmare that arrived 8 hours late, ruining 1st day plans. This breakdown happened twice on this route in a week. The 777s used have to be the original ones that Boeing built over 20 years ago. Replace the jet engines with props and they could pass for oversized B-29s used during WW II.
