Earning extra points is easy
With the Double Days promotion, all you need to do is register, and any trip you have planned within the two month window will be eligible to earn double points, as long as you’ve paid cash. A friend and I are visiting Philadelphia (and another friend) next week, so we’ll both earn double points on that trip! With these promotions, the math can really work in your favor, especially if you also have the Amtrak Guest Rewards World credit card from Bank of America. Let’s use that Philadelphia trip I have coming up as an example: a $112 Amtrak Northeast Regional coach class ticket. That ticket will net me:
- 224 base points
- 224 bonus points for participating in the Double Days promotion
- 336 points for using the Amtrak Guest Rewards World credit card
In total, I’m earning 784 points for one roundtrip fare! That’s SEVEN points per dollar spent–a pretty good return on the ticket price! And while 784 points isn’t enough for a roundtrip ticket between NYC and Philadelphia, it is about 20% of the points you need–not bad for one purchase.
Conclusion
Even if you don’t think you’ll take an Amtrak trip in the next two months, registering for a promotion like this is a no-brainer! Plans change, and you may find yourself needed to book a ticket, and wouldn’t double points be nice? Again, here’s the link to register for the promotion, and while you’re at it–register for their other promotions too!

I’m confused the above offer says you have to pay cash and then below it claims you can get 336 extra points by using the Amtrak credit card. Can you please clear up the confusion for me.
pb — paying by amtrak credit card is the equivalent of paying “cash.” (as compared to say, paying using your previously earned Amtrak Guest Rewards points)
Hi Sam. I surmise that these double points promos do NOT count towards earning AGR “status.” (My travel during previous double promos earned the extra points — but they didn’t apparently count towards status.)
When I first joined AGR few years ago, I hoped/guessed they would, based on this verbiage:
“Tier Qualifying Points (TQPs) count toward your tier status and are earned by traveling on Amtrak and during special promotions.”
Yet I over the past several years of AGR membership, I don’t recall YET seeing any “special promotions” that count towards status? Have you or any other of your readers?
(I ask in part as I’m pushing for status – this year — have done 4/5th of the first tier via credit card spend….)
