With the battle for Seattle in full swing, Alaska is growing in the Seattle Metro area un a creative way: by adding service to another airport! Beginning in the fall of 2018, Alaska plans to add service out of Paine Field (PAE).
“As our region continues to grow at a record pace and Sea-Tac Airport nears capacity, the time is right to bring air service to our valued guests living in the North Sound. Today’s news means less time stuck in traffic on Interstate 5 and more time enjoying your vacation or making the most of your business trip.”
As the crow flies, Paine Field is 32 miles north of Seattle, which situates it as a more convenient alternative for those living in the suburbs north of Seattle.
While no routes were announced, Alaska did say that they planned to add nine daily flights using its fleet of Boeing 737 and Embraer 175 aircraft. While we’re left hanging on the routes, I have a feeling we’ll see some longer routes out of PAE, given the deployment of Boeing 737s. My guess? We’ll see flights to Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles for connections and maybe some wildcards like sub-daily service to Anchorage or Maui for vacationers.
Whatever the service, it’ll be interesting to see whether Alaska’s “new terminal” in Seattle will be a win for them. I’ll definitely have my eyes on this!
