I enjoy maps, and geography and things of that nature, so I’ve long been interested in the web game Geoguessr. I have played it a few times, though not very often and certainly not professionally. However, there is a professional Geoguessr “scene” and while maybe not as popular as other e-sports, there are (paying) tournaments where players identify where they are in the world in a matter of seconds. It’s truly amazing the amount of information these people can glean from 5 seconds of looking at a seemingly random photo from anywhere in the world.

Identifying A Plane Flight From The Window Pic

One of the best (if not THE best) and certainly one of the most famous Geoguessr players is named Rainbolt. I saw a recent video where he got a tweet of someone taking a picture out of the window of a flight

an airplane wing above a landscape

The person challenged Rainbolt to try and find his flight.

Which he then proceeded to do… in less than 10 minutes.

I found that to be a pretty entertaining video and also a bit of a sobering reminder of how little privacy you actually have.

The Bottom Line – The Moral Of The Story?

I think probably there are at least a few avgeeks reading this blog that might have been able to do something similar. And of course it would have been a bit trickier to do if he had been on a connecting flight. But I think one moral of the story is that you should probably refrain from (or at least be careful about) sharing any kind of vacation photos while you’re still away from home. And of course, never ever ever share a photo of your boarding pass!

What did you think of this video? Could you have identified the flight from just the window pic above?
