Sprint is offering up to 30,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® miles for switching to Sprint (and 5000 miles for existing customers). They have done this offer twice before – once in 2016 and again earlier this year, but both previous times it was only 25,000 total miles. You can see this Sprint promo page for more information about the current Sprint promo
Here are some of the highlights:
Up to 30,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® miles for switching to Sprint
There is a current promotion by Sprint and American Airlines – offering 30,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® miles for switching cell phone service to Sprint. You earn 25,000 AAdvantage® miles now (only for new customers), and you’ll get 5000 miles over the next 12 months (417 miles / month). This deal has been going on for a few months but has an increased signup offer now. It expires December 31st.
Existing customers are able to take advantage of the 5,000 miles (417 miles / month), though that will give up any discount you have through the Sprint Discount program (i.e. through your employer, school or other)
This offer is open for anyone – direct offer link. The promo page gives an end date of December 31st, 2017.
Sprint cell network
I know that many people are very passionate about the quality of different cell networks and horror stories of poor customer service, network or both. Personally I believe that most cell phone networks are overall very similar and certainly location dependent. I also have heard plenty of stories, good and bad, of customer service at all of the cell phone companies. Like I said, a lot of it is dependent on the network conditions in your particular location (or the places where you travel)
My experience with this promo
I actually signed up for this a few months ago and did receive my 20,000 bonus AA miles (though the Sprint store employees that helped me had no idea what I was talking about 😀 ). I’ve been personally happy with my Sprint service

If you are looking for a new long-term phone plan, then you can consider this promotion on its merits. I think that it’s a decent signup promotion value, but going forward, you’ll want to evaluate the 417 AA miles you get per month versus any other discounts you might get, such as through your work / employer. Most major employers and many groups and organizations offer cell phone discounts to all the major carriers, and those are typically in the range of ~20% off. I would say that would most likely be better than earning 417 American miles / month.
The other option would be if you’re brave enough to play “cell phone carrier switcheroo”, that you could take advantage of the signup bonus of this promotion. I do this with my gas and electric every few months, switching around to different carriers for better prices and signup bonuses. I will say that switching gas and electric services around can be a hassle and perhaps more time consuming than it’s worth, and I’d imagine it would also be a hassle to do this with phone companies but…. it seems that in a situation like mine, with an unlocked phone and no current contract, that I should be able to
- Sign up, pay the $30 activation fee, and get the 25,000 AAdvantage® miles
- Wait for the miles to post, paying for 1-2 months of service
- Cancel
So call it $100 all-in, though really it’s less than that since really my cost is any premium Sprint has over my current cell phone costs, which wouldn’t be a ton. Even paying $100 for 25,000 AAdvantage® miles seems like a pretty good deal. I am actually looking for a new cell phone plan as I’d like to consolidate myself, my wife and my kids on the same plan, so I’m going to think about this. We are currently on a variety of low cost carriers (Selectel, Puretalk, etc), and, if it makes sense, it would be nice to combine us all onto the same plan.
The promotion runs through December 31st, 2017, so you’d need to sign up before then.

My problem with Sprint is that they do a hard credit pull even if you bring your own device!
Now I heard that sprint will be taken over by T-mobile soon which is my current carrier. So if I switch to sprint, I will come back to T-mobile again by default. Did I get that right
how much will they give me not to cancel my sprint account?
I’m curious what is the cheapest plan that will qualify? What I’m seeing online is $40 (after a $5 rebate that doesn’t show until two months have gone by) so realistically it’s $90 + activation = $120. Am I correct?
And I forgot taxes and fees… probably another $20/$30. It seems that signing up and cancelling is not really worth it.
What plan makes the “switch and cancel” worthwhile. It seems to me that the cheapest plan Sprint offers is that $40 2gb plan, and that since you need 8-10 weeks for the miles to post one ends up paying $30 to activate, $40*3 + taxes so basically close to $170. Not $100 as you write in the blog.
How soon did you get your signup bonus miles after signing up? I know it officially says up to 8 weeks, but some have seemed to say it’s actually much faster.
We signed up in early July and the miles posted on August 28th
The miles on my account posted in just about 31 days. On my wife’s account, we are on day 35 and still waiting. Our award hold ends in 2 days. Here’s to holding out hope!
Hi, so will this work if I bring my unlocked phone, get a new SIM card and the $40/mo plan? I have no credit as I moved to the US recently, the guy at the store didn’t know about the promo but said this shouldn’t be an issue since I won’t enter in any phone lease . Anyone can clarify? The sprint reps know nothing.
